Reuben Quiche
Source: Waverly Crackers
35 Waverly Crackers, finely rolled
(about 1 1/2 cup crumbs)
1 1/2 teaspoons caraway seed
1/4 cup margarine or butter, melted
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese, divided
4 ounces deli sliced corned beef, chopped
1/2 cup sauerkraut, well drained
2 tablespoons sliced pimientos
4 eggs, beaten
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon Grey Poupon Dijon Mustard
Sliced dill pickles, for garnish
Mix cracker crumbs, caraway seed and margarine or butter; press on bottom and side of 9-inch pie plate. Bake at 375 degrees F for 5 to 7 minutes or until lightly browned.
Sprinkle half the cheese over crust; top with corned beef, sauerkraut, pimientos and remaining cheese. Beat eggs, milk and mustard; pour over pie filling.
Bake at 375 degrees F for 30 to 35 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Let stand 5 minutes; serve garnished with pickles if desired.

Not only is The Nightmare Before Christmas one of the best musicals of the past two decades; it may well be Danny Elfman's masterpiece, successfully integrating his main influences (from Cab Calloway to Nino Rota) into a fantastic whole. The first disc of this reissue features the original soundtrack, its songs still teetering between dark humor and poetic flights of fancy; this so-called kids' music is at least as sophisticated and skilled as anything you're likely to hear on Broadway. The second disc includes demo versions of four songs on which Elfman plays and sings everything, and five new covers of some of Nightmare's best-loved songs. Marilyn Manson successfully applies his spooky Weimar-circus style on "This Is Halloween" while Panic! At the Disco's lushly orchestrated take on the same tune is closer to the original. Fiona Apple's poignant "Sally's Song" is enhanced by very nice string charts, and She Wants Revenge does a disco take on "Kidnap the Sandy Claws." Best perhaps is Fall Out Boy's cover of "What's This?" which sounds like an unexpected cross between the Beach Boys and Queen. A highly recommended set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

If you live long enough with a rock & roll heart, you find that dreams occasionally come true. One of the oldest dreams for many Neil Young fans has been that the prodigious folk-rocker would somehow find his way back--even once--to the youthful, bruised majesty of his epochal 1970 album, After the Gold Rush. Silver & Gold comes very close to evoking the same dreamy suggestiveness as that first solo masterpiece in Young's long career, but, for obvious reasons, from an autumnal perspective.
A video companion to the CD of the same name, Silver & Gold is actually a longer, fuller experience of Young's stirring acoustic concerts than the album represents. The hushed intimacy of Young's playing and singing, sans backup, in such a setting can be unforgettable, and this widescreen presentation captures that delicate beauty.
While the play list has its share of familiar gems, the emphasis is on a group of thematically and musically related songs Young had been arranging just prior to the CSNY reunion. Among them are gentle, double-edged reflections on childhood ("Daddy Went Walkin'"), elemental odes to mature love ("Silver & Gold"), and richly imagistic allusions to loss and rediscovered innocence. These and a number of other new titles are largely of a piece, 30 years later, with After the Gold Rush and its blend of melancholy stateliness, crosscurrents of pure emotion, and touches of the mystical. The difference is in the experience of time: After the Gold Rush confirms the shifting, glorious colors of a sensitive young man's constant immediacy, while the new material on Silver & Gold blurs all boundaries between past and present.
Young doesn't fail to stoke our affection with his absent-minded strolls and sloppy prepping of his instruments, but his emotional concentration on standards such as "City of Brotherly Love," "Harvest Moon," and "Long May You Run" (played on pipe organ and sounding like the church hymn it was meant to be) is something to behold. --Tom Keogh

Obviously the Disney suits gave more than two figs about the legacy from the first Beast film, as they reassembled the former cast and spent some cash on production and tune-smithing for this straight-to-video effort. The events unfold between the time in the first film where Belle bartered herself to the Beast and her later return to the village to save her father. So the Beast's heart still hasn't been melted yet, and he's susceptible to the inky persuasions of Forte (Tim Curry), a malevolent pipe organ (and former music teacher to the prince). Belle is still trying to win over the Beast and decides that bringing Christmas to the castle will be the way to do it. Please control that gag reflex for this does work remarkably well, and though entirely unnecessary and certainly not a complement to the original, it doesn't tarnish its good name. --Keith Simanton
