2 pounds hamburger
1 cup soda cracker crumbs
1/2 cup onion
2 eggs
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 cup milk
Mix well. Bake in a long oblong pan for 45 minutes at 350 degrees F.
Pour 1 (8 ounce) can pizza sauce over baked meatloaf and then sprinkle with 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese. Bake until cheese is melted.

Chances are, the most devoted fans of these three musicians have heard these tunes before, thanks to the crafty pizza-delivery boy who filched the tapes from Garcia's kitchen soon after they were recorded in 1993. That said, the warm, intimate performances here are very much worth an official CD release. The sessions came about when Tony Rice was in Northern California to record the delightful duet-collection Tone Poems with David Grisman. Garcia stopped by to hang out and jam with his old buddy Grisman and with Rice, one of his guitar idols. The disc retains all of the joy and spontaneity you'd expect from such an informal setting--Grisman even elected to leave in the between-song banter, which mostly consists of genuine overflowing mutual praise. The music itself, primarily traditional folk songs, is quite engaging thanks to Garcia's affecting, soulful, pained vocals and to the picking of all three. The contrast in flat-picking-guitar styles makes for an interesting combination: while Rice is technically superb, marvelously quick, and of remarkably clarion tone, Garcia is much more emotional and visceral, feeling his way along. There are a handful of exploratory, off-the-cuff jams that add to the impulsive nature of the whole project. Had the threesome actually intended this to be released, it probably wouldn't have the appeal it does, for this is the product of friends and music lovers, not recording artists. --Marc Greilsamer

The title story is one of his warmest and most uncharacteristic--a simple story about how parents find a fun activity for their bored son by imagining him as a pizza. The other stories, "Doctor De Soto" and "The Amazing Bone," have more typical Steig bite; the former (an Oscar® nominee) is about a mouse-dentist who takes on a risky patient, while the latter tells of Pearl the Pig who finds a talking bone. All three stories are wonderfully illustrated, and Chevy Chase ("Pizza") and John Lithgow ("Bone") supply pitch-perfect narration. As with all the DVDs in this collection, the added content doubles the running time. Three additional stories keep the rambunctious air that made Steig (like Roald Dahl) so popular with kids and adults, although sensitive kids and parents might find the perilous situations unfunny. Tomi Ungerer's "The Three Robbers" and "Moon Man" bookend Margaret Mahy's "The Great White Man-Eating Shark," which follows a boy who pretends to be a shark and scares beachgoers. This remastered re-release of the Alabama foursome's 1999 sophomore record picks up where its debut album Gangstabilly (also re-issued by New West Records) left off--fruitful storyteller Patterson Hood and his cotton-drawl vocals bobbing and weaving through the trepidations and peculiarities of his life in the Deep South. The Truckers abstain from some of the white-trash bulls-eyes and volume 11 blasters on their debut for a 14-song hootenanny about riding bulldozers in red clay, a reclusive uncle, giving up sex for the Lord, and a Memphis performance by the late shock-rocker G.G. Allin. The bluesy sing-a-long "Nine Bullets" features one round of lead for each of Hood's adversaries, but two songs later he harmoniously reminisces his great-grandmother in "Box of Spiders." A: Three years ago when I was in Bologna researching "The Broker", I discovered American football. One of my guides in the area played football for the Bologna Warriors for 10 years. I couldn't believe that American football actually existed there, but the more I heard about it the more intrigued I became. Q: There is some great football writing in this novel. What kind of research was involved in capturing how this American institution is played in small town Italy? A: The only way to research the book was to go to Parma and watch a game. The coach is an American who played at Illinois State, and he proved to be extremely valuable. I met many of the Italian players and the story simply unfolded. Q: Speaking of research, you write lovingly of Italian food and wine in this book. What's your idea of the perfect Italian meal? A: First course: prosicutto and melon; second course: stuffed tortellini; third course: roasted stuffed capon, all served with a great Barolo wine. Q: Without giving away too much of the plot, your protagonist falls in love by the novel's end. Did you know when you started writing that Rick would get the girl? A: Of course. Q: You have a new legal thriller coming in January 2008. Can you give us any hints about what to expect? A: I really don't like to talk about a book until it's finished. Sorry.
