Crazy Meat Loaf
1 (10 ounce) package frozen mixed vegetables
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cups soft bread crumbs
1/4 cup chopped parsley
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon thyme
3/4 teaspoon Tabasco® sauce
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon basil
1 1/2 pounds ground chuck
1 cup grated Cheddar cheese
Cook mixed vegetables for 5 minutes in boiling salted water; drain. Melt butter in skillet; add onion and cook until tender but not brown. Add bread crumbs, parsley, 1/4 teaspoon salt, thyme and 1/4 teaspoon Tabasco® sauce.
Combine egg, milk, remaining salt, basil and remaining Tabasco® sauce a in mixing bowl. Add 1 cup of bread crumb mixture to egg mixture; mix well. Gently blend ground chuck into bread crumb-egg mixture. Handle as little as possible for more tender meat. Gently press all but 2 cups of meat mixture over bottom and three-fourths up the sides of a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan, leaving center hollow.
Combine remaining bread crumb mixture with mixed vegetables and grated cheese; turn into hollow space in loaf pan. Cover with remaining meat mixture. Bake at 350 degrees F for 1 hour. Let stand for 10 minutes before turning out onto serving platter.
Serve with cheese sauce, if desired.

Assisting him is the hapless hunchback Igor (Marty Feldman) and the buxom but none-too-bright maiden Inga (Teri Garr), and when Frankenstein succeeds in creating his monster (Peter Boyle), the stage is set for an outrageous revision of the Frankenstein legend. With comedy highlights too numerous to mention, Brooks guides his brilliant cast (also including Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, and Gene Hackman in a classic cameo role) through scene after scene of inspired hilarity. Indeed, Young Frankenstein is a charmed film, nothing less than a comedy classic, representing the finest work from everyone involved. Not one joke has lost its payoff, and none of the countless gags have lost their zany appeal. From a career that includes some of the best comedies ever made, this is the film for which Mel Brooks will be most fondly remembered. Susan George (Straw Dogs) is ex-groupie Mary and Peter Fonda (Easy Rider) is wannabe-NASCAR driver Larry. They're thieves on the run from sheriff Vic Morrow (The Blackboard Jungle), who carries neither gun nor badge. According to director John Hough (The Legend of Hell House), his white trash cult classic was "an action picture with a lot of stunts." That about sums it up. The Tarantino favorite is slim on character development, but overstuffed with automobile-oriented action (most revolving around a 1969 Dodge Charger). Notable stunts include a game of chicken with a couple of 18-wheelers, a low-flying helicopter chase, and a death-defying leap over a moving bridge (Speed would up the ante with a bus). Adapted from the novel The Chase, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry also has one shocker of an ending. This slaphappy collection of goofy pratfalls and culture-clash gags became an enormous international smash, and made a sort of star out of the Bushman selected to play the central role, the completely ingratiating N!Xau. He plays a man, unaware of white culture, who finds a Coca-Cola bottle in the Kalahari (dropped by a passing pilot) and promptly has his life turned around by this mystical object. The movie looks slipshod and even amateurish at times, yet its attitude is so bubbly it's hard to resist. Proving that physical comedy remains a true international language, millions of moviegoers around the world drank it up.
The Gods Must Be Crazy II (1989) returns N!Xau to the bizarre world of the white man, this time in a slicker plot (and a with a bigger budget) that, perhaps predictably, yields fewer real belly laughs than the first time around. Director Jamie Uys sticks to his cherished notions that tribesmen are wiser than civilized people, and that fast-motion comedy is inherently funny. The storyline begins with N!Xau's innocent Bushman searching for his lost children; he then gets sidetracked by subplots. The humor is basic, but in best silent-movie tradition Uys prepares his set-pieces with elaborate care, and he understands the value of the long-delayed pay-off. --Robert Horton
