Cheesecake Cookies
Yield: 16 servings
5 tablespoons butter, softened
1 cup oat flour
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/3 cup Brown Sugar Twin, packed
1/2 cup Splenda
1 egg
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
In a medium bowl blend thoroughly butter, Brown Sugar Twin and flour with a fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Put 1 cup of the mixture aside for topping. Press remaining mixture into an 8-inch square baking dish; bake for 15 minutes.
In another bowl combine sugar and cream cheese, mixing until smooth. Thoroughly beat in egg, heavy cream, lemon juice and vanilla extract. Spread over the baked crust and sprinkle with remaining brown sugar mixture. Bake for 25 minutes. Let cool, then chill for at least 1 hour.
Cut into 16 squares; serve.

Theda Bara was the first of the great vamps, but by the late 1910s she was being eclipsed by a new breed of screen temptresses. The best-remembered of these was Louise Glaum, whose first claim to fame was as the perennial bad-girl dance-hall queen in William S. Hart's westerns. From there, she took leading roles in a string of torrid melodramas: lurid films bearing titles like "A Law Unto Herself" and "Sweetheart of the Doomed." She topped herself with "Sex" in 1920, just as the age of the vamp was coming to a close. Here she plays a cabaret star who lures married men to amorous disaster. Her spiderweb costume is a treat in itself: the symbolism may not be subtle but it certainly is apt! Organ score by Bob Vaughn. The first half of SEX is a fast-paced, jazzy story filled with fun, action, and frivolity. The second half slows down, pretty much only showing "filmed conversations" without a lot of action. The fun has died. But it is all appropriate for our leading lady (Louise Glaum.) It sets the tone for what she is feeling and how we're supposed to feel. Sympathetic? No, not really. There are no sympathetic characters in this film. But there aren't any unlikeable ones either. In the party scene, watch out for the drunk man on all fours who crawls up to a woman, lifts up her dress a little and bites her on the calf. Hot stuff for 1920.
