DeLonghi XU120 Alfredo Toaster OvenView This Product at AmazonThe very appearance of this Italian-designed oven puts it a cut above the average toaster oven. But it has more than looks going for it. The DuraStone-enameled porcelain interior distributes heat evenly for maximum consistency in cooking. Bake, broil, toast, top-brown, and keep-warm functions make this an ideal multifunction family oven. Its large toasting capacity accommodates up to 6 slices of bread, a 10-inch pizza, or a small chicken. The toast color selector and an end-of-cycle signal with auto shutoff help you make toast the way you like it.
A simplified selector dial allows you to control the cooking program and temperature, and the oven bottom opens for easy crumb removal. The porcelain interior wipes clean with a cloth. Bake and broil pan, baking rack, and instruction booklet with recipes are all included. --Matthew Evans

RomanzaView This Product at AmazonFrom his childhood on the family farm in rural Tuscany to the worldwide stage, Andrea Bocelli has achieved phenomenal success. His singing is only partially the point, and his fame owes much more to the aura of romance and the
romantic archetype that's attached to him.
Romanza is by far Bocelli's largest success, winning adoration thanks to the swooning vocals and the easy, sometimes lush, always pop-safe instrumental textures and melodies. As far as his opera chops go, Bocelli has won the approval of Pavarotti but likely will not wow enthusiasts. The upside is that Bocelli will likely grow the opera pie, convincing labels to take on more operatic projects.

Sarah Brightman ClassicsView This Product at AmazonHave some friends who still haven't discovered what the Sarah Brightman fuss is all about? You'll find the perfect introduction to make converts of them all in
Classics, so they'll have no more excuses to remain clueless. Sporting a Botticelli-inspired image of the platinum-selling soprano on the cover,
Classics is a classy anthology including highlights from three of Brightman's chart-topping releases along with seven new tracks. Songs personally selected by the diva as her favorite classical interpretations are culled from her previous blockbusters:
Time To Say Goodbye,
Eden, and
La Luna. And whether you're a fan already in the fold or one in the making, the new material here shows the diva at the top of her form, in new renderings of "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "Nessun Dorma" (accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic)--fascinating displays of the operatic confidence she's developed over her career. Other new offerings include a touching version of Schubert's "Ave Maria,' "Winter Light," a fresh take on her signature song "Pie Jesu" (from Andrew Lloyd Webber's
Requiem). "Alhambra" and "Dans La Nuit"--a real treat, bathing the listener in Brightman's silky, sensuous vocalism--add two original titles to her famous adaptations of classical melodies to new lyrics (using Chopin's haunting E major Etude in the latter case). All told, a lovely affirmation of the directions Brightman has boldly taken in her career to date.

Jules Massenet: ManonView This Product at AmazonInternational superstars Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón give inspired performances in Massenet's passionate opera, Manon. Netrebko gives full range to her abilities as a singer and actress in portraying innocence, lust, greed and, above all, beauty. It is Netrebko's mesmerizing performance which makes Villazón's youthful passion and ultimate despair even more authentic and heart-breaking. The setting in this production has been updated to the 1950s and the entire opera takes place as if Manon were the star of her own film. Indeed, Netrebko transforms her character from the innocence of Audrey Hepburn through the voluptuousness of Marilyn Monroe into the tragedy of Ingrid Bergman. The work of director Vincent Paterson, known for his work on Broadway and in music videos, is especially effective in creating an energetic and ultimately tragic performance with stunning visual splendor. Netrebko and Villazón, the true dream-team for this opera, are joined by the conductor Daniel Barenboim who leads the Staatskapelle Berlin in a spontaneous and passionate performance.
Roman Holiday (1953)View This Product at AmazonMaybe it doesn't quite live up to its sterling reputation, and maybe the leading man and director were slightly miscast. But who cares?
Roman Holiday is the film that brought Audrey Hepburn to prominence, and the world movie audience went weak at the knees. The endlessly charming Hepburn had her first starring role in this sweet romance, playing a European princess on an official tour through Rome. Frustrated by her lack of connection to the real world, she slips away from her protective handlers and goes on a spree, aided by a tough-guy news reporter (Gregory Peck). Director William Wyler, more at home with such heavy-going, Oscar-winning classics as
The Best Years of Our Lives and
Ben- Hur, doesn't always keep the champagne bubbles afloat, and the Peck role would have fit Cary Grant like a silk glove. But the film is great fun, the location shooting is irresistible, and Hepburn embodies an image of chic style that would rule for the rest of the fifties. No coincidence: she won an Oscar, and so did veteran costume designer Edith Head.

Il PostinoView This Product at AmazonItalian star and filmmaker Massimo Troisi was dying of heart failure even before this film, his dream project, began production, and he prevailed upon British director Michael Radford (
White Mischief) to see him and the film through to the end. (The 40-year-old Troisi, a beloved comic actor in Italy, died the day production wrapped.) Based on true events, Troisi plays a shy postman who strikes up an unlikely friendship with exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret). Through Neruda's example and tutelage, the hero learns to think of his Italian fishing village in lyrical terms, as well as how to talk to women and even find the strength to take his political stands. Sweet as it is, the film finally pushes beyond its charming borders to become an even more complex and poignant story about the pain of growing into one's destiny.

Alfredo's Food FightView This Product at AmazonIt's ridiculous, it sends a terrible message about respecting food, but it's--we have to admit it--pretty darn fun. Poor Chef Alfredo is just trying to do his job, bringing diners platters of food. But somehow he manages to get caught in the midst of a wild food fight. What a mess! Note to parents: surprise! It's really not a mess. The far-flung spaghetti and meatballs are actually wads of fabric with yarn, so no need to break out the stain remover. Unless, of course, this game inspires real food fights come dinnertime. Best not to serve spaghetti and meatballs within a few days of playing.
Anyway, back to the game: players use forks to fling spaghetti and meatballs at the spinning chef figure--more specifically, at the Velcro plates he holds in each hand. The player with the most direct hits wins. Sigh. Only in America. Game includes one motorized spaghetti plate, one chef, four forks and four napkins (bases), 12 soft, safe meatballs with trailing spaghetti, and instructions. For two to four players. Requires two AA batteries (not included). (Ages 5 to 8). --Emilie Coulter

Icons and Saints of the Eastern Orthodox Church (Guide to Imagery Series)View This Product at AmazonAn icon (from the Greek word "eikon," "image") is a wooden panel painting of a holy person or scene from Orthodox Christianity, the religion of the Byzantine Empire that is practiced today mainly in Greece and Russia. It was believed that these works acted as intermediaries between worshipers and the holy personages they depicted. Their pictorial language is stylized and primarily symbolic, rather than literal and narrative. Indeed, every attitude, pose, and color depicted in an icon has a precise meaning, and their painters--usually monks--followed prescribed models from iconographic manuals.
The goal of this book is to catalogue the vast heritage of images according to iconographic type and subject, from the most ancient at the Monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai to those from Greece, Constantinople, and Russia. Chapters focus on the role of icons in the Orthodox liturgy and on common iconic subjects, including the fathers and saints of the Eastern Church and the life of Jesus and his followers. As with other volumes in the Guide to Imagery series, this book includes a wealth of color illustrations in which details are called out for discussion.
