St. Louis Bread Company Baby Hot Browns
Source: Sue Stees - St. Louis Bread Company
1 chicken bouillon cube
1/4 cup hot water
3/4 cup half-and-half
3 tablespoons salted butter
2 tablespoons flour
1 cup grated Swiss cheese
5 strips bacon, cooked and crumbled
1 onion, thinly sliced
6 ounces cooked turkey, thinly sliced
18 slices party rye or small French bread
Parsley
Dissolve bouillon cube in hot water, add half-and-half.
In saucepan, melt butter and add flour. Whisk and cook mixture until frothy and raw flour taste is gone. While stirring, add bouillon mixture. Stir constantly with whisk until the sauce thickens and begins to bubble. Add Swiss cheese and stir until smooth. (If sauce needs thinning, heat and add a little water.)
Assemble hot browns by placing turkey and onion on each bread slice. Top with sauce and crumbled bacon. Heat at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes, garnish with parsley.

Fresh from his astronomical success with Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, Bee Gee Barry Gibb penned the title track (sung by Frankie Valli). Sha Na Na is over-represented, and actress Stockard Channing struts her, um, versatility, singing a couple of tracks. This has become a touchstone in American culture, and so isn't likely to improve our standing in the world's eyes. Maybe the point is that it's supposed to sound amateurish, but it does manage to eke out some fun, most notably on the hit "You're the One That I Want." --Scott Wilson

Gergiev justifies his reputation as an interpreter and as an orchestra leader, getting amazingly precise playing from the ensemble. A period piece set in the Great Depression and based on the extremely popular American Girl book series, Kit Kittredge is a moving and believable story about a smart 10-year-old girl whose family is profoundly affected by the Depression. May, 1934 finds Kit Kittredge (Abigail Breslin) living a very comfortable life in a nice home with her mother (Julia Ormond) and father (Chris O'Donnell) despite the Depression that is affecting many of her neighbors. When her father's auto dealership is taken back by the bank, Kit's father is forced to head for Chicago to look for work, leaving his family struggling to make ends meet by taking in borders. Kindhearted and generous by nature, Kit's nose for news and her aspirations of becoming a great reporter lead her to write a portrait of the boardinghouse run by her mother, essentially a kid's view of the Depression as well as an article about hobos that challenges many commonly held prejudices. Kit determinedly submits her articles to the local Cincinnati Register paper, regardless of the chief editor's stern ways and obvious lack of interest. When her own family and boarders become the victims of a crime, Kit's must utilize her investigative skills to solve the crime and exonerate her friend Will (Max Thieriot). Breslin's performance in this film is stellar--viewers can't help but believe that she is Kit Kittredge. The filmmakers' attention to detail ensures that everything from scenery props to music and dialogue seem completely authentic, and performances by Joan Cusack as the mobile librarian, Stanley Tucci as the traveling magician, Jane Krakowski as the desperate-for-love dance instructor, and Zach Mills as Kit's young friend, are all impressive. Serious American Girl fans, period film lovers, and viewers just looking for a good story will love this film. (Ages 3 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Director John Landis (The Blues Brothers) doesn't have the world's lightest touch, but he hits most of the jokes hard and quite a few of them pay off. If Continuum, the second feature length, made-for-DVD film spun off from the long-running Stargate SG-1 television series, marks the end of this wing of the franchise--and it is hardly a certainty, given the show's Lazarus-like history--then all involved, including the viewer, should be well satisfied. Continuum commingles all the elements that have made Stargate so eminently watchable over the years, including engaging characters and storyline, plenty of action, impressive sets, and first-rate special effects. This time the whole gang is on hand, as the most recent SG-1 contigent (Ben Browder as fearless leader Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell, Amanda Tapping as the brainy Lt. Col. Samantha Carter, Christopher Judge as the implacable alien Teal'c, Michael Shanks as the ever-resourceful Dr. Daniel Jackson, and Claudia Black as the irreverent, motor-mouthed Vala) is joined by characters whose roles had been reduced or eliminated along the way; principal among the latter is Richard Dean Anderson, whose Major General Jack O'Neill makes a welcome return after sitting out The Ark of Truth, the first post-series film (both of Stargate Command's head honchos, played by Beau Bridges and the late Don S. Davis, are also back). The villain is familiar as well: Ba'al (Cliff Simon), the last of the "Goa'uld system lords," who's scheduled to be executed--or, more specifically, "extracted," whereby the bad mojo inside him will be exorcised. Things don't quite go as planned, of course. Ba'al has managed to manipulate time, creating a situation where Mitchell, Jackson, and Carter find themselves caught in a paradox, an alternate timeline in which the Stargate program never even existed, making it easy for the bad guy and his gigantic space brigade to launch an all-out attack on Earth (though long-threatened throughout the series, such an invasion never actually happened until now). Our heroes' intrepid efforts to thwart Ba'al's dastardly scheme take them from the Arctic (for real) to the cockpits of F-15 jets and even the hold of a 1930s cargo ship (built specially for the occasion). Jacob Jankowski says: "I am ninety. Or ninety-three. One or the other." At the beginning of Water for Elephants, he is living out his days in a nursing home, hating every second of it. His life wasn't always like this, however, because Jacob ran away and joined the circus when he was twenty-one. It wasn't a romantic, carefree decision, to be sure. His parents were killed in an auto accident one week before he was to sit for his veterinary medicine exams at Cornell. He buried his parents, learned that they left him nothing because they had mortgaged everything to pay his tuition, returned to school, went to the exams, and didn't write a single word. He walked out without completing the test and wound up on a circus train. The circus he joins, in Depression-era America, is second-rate at best. With Ringling Brothers as the standard, Benzini Brothers is far down the scale and pale by comparison.
Water for Elephants is the story of Jacob's life with this circus. Sara Gruen spares no detail in chronicling the squalid, filthy, brutish circumstances in which he finds himself. The animals are mangy, underfed or fed rotten food, and abused. Jacob, once it becomes known that he has veterinary skills, is put in charge of the "menagerie" and all its ills. Uncle Al, the circus impresario, is a self-serving, venal creep who slaps people around because he can. August, the animal trainer, is a certified paranoid schizophrenic whose occasional flights into madness and brutality often have Jacob as their object. Jacob is the only person in the book who has a handle on a moral compass and as his reward he spends most of the novel beaten, broken, concussed, bleeding, swollen and hungover. He is the self-appointed Protector of the Downtrodden, and... he falls in love with Marlena, crazy August's wife. Not his best idea.
The most interesting aspect of the book is all the circus lore that Gruen has so carefully researched. She has all the right vocabulary: grifters, roustabouts, workers, cooch tent, rubes, First of May, what the band plays when there's trouble, Jamaican ginger paralysis, life on a circus train, set-up and take-down, being run out of town by the "revenooers" or the cops, and losing all your hooch. There is one glorious passage about Marlena and Rosie, the bull elephant, that truly evokes the magic a circus can create. It is easy to see Marlena's and Rosie's pink sequins under the Big Top and to imagine their perfect choreography as they perform unbelievable stunts. The crowd loves it--and so will the reader. The ending is absolutely ludicrous and really quite lovely. --Valerie Ryan
