Aunt Rae's Dutch Hustle Cake (heirloom)

Source: from my heirloom exchange file. It is a recipe from my Aunt Rae, my father's sister. She was a terrific cook.
For many years, Aunt Rae ran the lunchroom at Hillside Avenue School, in Hillside NJ. I remember that she used to make all the sandwiches for all the kids, everyday. That was back when students could walk home for lunch if they wanted to. A lot of the children in her school chose to stay and eat the school lunches. There was milk and a piece of fruit in the bag lunches that she prepared.
Ingredients in order of use
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter
1 package regular yeast
1/4 cup warm water
1 egg, well beaten
1 1/3 cups sifted flour
Scald milk, stir in sugar, salt and butter. Cool to lukewarm.
In a mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Stir in the lukewarm milk mixture. Add the egg and flour. Beat until smooth. Spread dough evenly in a 9-inch square pan.
Arrange on top: 1 1/2 cups thinly sliced apple pieces, sprinkled with 2 tablespoons brown sugar and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Dot with 2 tablespoons butter.

Director David Lynch's affection for kitschy lounge music and emotionally overwrought mid-century pop has long since proven to be more than trend or irony; indeed, it's often the uneasy spiritual axis of his films. The soundtrack of Mulholland Dr. turns on the usual Lynchian motifs (the brooding atmosphere of Angelo Badalamenti's ominous synth-and-orchestra cues tossed with a dash of Lynch's own off-center compositions), yet manages to evoke a sense of foreboding that's distinctly its own. Badalamenti leads off with a curve, the nervous orchestra swing-romp "Jitterbug," before descending into a dark soundscape that becomes murkier and more avant-goth at every turn. Bubbling through that morass are pop nuggets variously cheesy (Dave Cavanaugh's lounge-ready "The Beast"), lugubriously bluesy (Sonny Boy Williamson's take on Willie Dixon's "Bring It On Home"), and alternately innocent ("I've Told Every Little Star") and liturgical ("Llorando"). Three tracks of the director's own (cowritten with John Neff) skulking Lounge Music from Hell ratchet up the tension even further; it's the perfect garnish for this darkly delicious film-music cocktail. --Jerry McCulley

There, the broken family moves into a spooky old mansion passed on to them by the kids' great-aunt, Lucinda (Joan Plowright), who is spending her twilight years in managed care and whose scientist father, Arthur Spiderwick (David Strathairn), disappeared some 80 years ago. Jared, angry, defiant, and determined to live with the father who seems to have abandoned him, investigates strange happenings and discovers Arthur's secret notations on fairies, ogres, and other mythical creatures that live both in and outside the house. Having no idea where his curiosity is leading, Jared soon finds that he and his family are under siege from goblins and a powerful ogre (Nick Nolte) who wants Arthur's notebook. Suddenly, the boy who is a lightning rod for a troubled family becomes a resourceful warrior intent on saving his loved ones from powerful forces. The Spiderwick Chronicles benefits enormously from a script (partially written by John Sayles) that treats, quite seriously, the emotional pain of its human characters and makes Jared's will to survive the very real engine of an otherwise fantastic story. It helps, too, that director Mark Waters, who brings a warm and knowing touch to outlandish material (Freaky Friday), has a way of making the spectacular elements of The Spiderwick Chronicles genuine enough to stir real excitement and suspense.
