Cranberry Cream Cookie Mix in a Jar

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup quick-cooking oatmeal
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup vanilla or white chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped pecans

Combine flour, baking soda and salt. Pour into wide-mouth, 1-quart jar. Tap on counter, then press firmly into place. Add granulated sugar; press into place. Add layers of oatmeal, brown sugar, cranberries, chips and pecans, pressing each into place. Close jar tightly.

Cranberry Cream Drop Cookies

Contents of jar
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Pour ingredients from jar into a large bowl; stir to combine.

In another large bowl, beat butter until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla extract; beat to combine (mixture will looked curdled). Add dry ingredients; beat at lowest speed with electric mixer or with wooden spoon until well combined.

Form dough into 1-inch balls. Place 2 inches apart on cookie sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Let cool 5 minutes on baking sheet, then remove to wire rack.

Makes 2 1/2 dozen cookies, per cookie: 103 calories, 5.5 grams fat, 2.5 grams saturated fat, 16 milligrams cholesterol, 1 gram protein, 12 grams carbohydrate, 8 grams sugar, 0.5 grams fiber, 66 milligrams sodium, 12 milligrams calcium

  It's been a long wait for the solo debut from Irish icon Dolores O'Riordan. After all, the Cranberries issued their swan song in 2001. After their break up, O'Riordan collaborated with Germany's Jam and Spoon, Italy's Zucchero, and David Lynch composer Angelo Badalamenti. She also appeared, as herself, in the 2006 comedy Click. All the while, she toiled away on her first solo effort. Fortunately, good things come to those who wait. Co-produced by Youth (the Verve, U2), Are You Listening? is a throwback to 1980s-era Siouxsie and the Banshees and Sinead O'Connor--sweeping keyboards, forceful drumming, and muscular guitar work. It may seem like a melodramatic move, but the music never overwhelms the slight yet steely figure at the center of the maelstrom, particularly on the lilting "Ordinary Day" and haunting "Black Widow." Cranberries fans expecting something more demure may be taken aback, but O'Riordan's supple voice should win over most skeptics. And lyrically, she compensates with tender words inspired by her husband ("Apple of My Eye"), the death of her mother-in-law ("Black Widow"), and the birth of her youngest child ("Ordinary Day"). --Kathleen C.   Here's a video package that is, well, fruitful. And regardless of one's opinion of the Cranberries, no buyer will be shortchanged--not with well over an hour of music from their first decade together (17 music videos, plus four "alternate takes"), loads of live material (including a 34-minute, nine-song concert), a 26-minute documentary, and even an interactive DVD-ROM. It helps that the group's music--sometimes melodic and harmony-laden ("Dreams," "Ode to My Family"), sometimes powerful and driving ("Zombie"), sometimes both ("This Is the Day")--is also good, and that singer and principal songwriter Dolores O'Riordan is an appealing presence. The music videos, guided by a variety of directors, are all worthy, sometimes considerably more than that; and if the group's 2000 concert in their native Ireland reveals them to be a somewhat less compelling live presence, well, there's still enough juice in these Cranberries to slake almost anyone's thirst. --Sam Graham

  Recorded in December 1999 before a massive and wildly enthusiastic French audience, this Cranberries concert is remarkable testimony to the Irish band's seasoning, evolving confidence, and heightened sense of fun in the years since the release of their breakthrough hit singles ("Linger," "Zombie," "Ode to My Family," all performed here). Fans who saw the Limerick-born group's early- '90s tours recognized in singer-songwriter Dolores O'Riordan equal parts gamine, witch, and an inspirational incarnation of W.B. Yeats's Glimmering Girl. Now, however, Beneath the Skin: Live in Paris underscores O'Riordan's more relaxed, womanly stage presence, as well as a rounder, fuller sound from founding members Mike Hogan (bass), his brother Noel Hogan (guitar), and drummer Fergal Lawler.

  Strutting at various times in a flowing robe, leather mini-skirt, or white pants, the diminutive O'Riordan leads the Cranberries through an overview of their Celtic-tinged, alternately jangly or thrashing repertoire. As always, they're at their best when they reach beyond O'Riordan's tendencies toward lyrical self-congratulation. When they don't, a bit of monotony fogs up the proceedings. When they do, however, which is frequently in Beneath the Skin, the Cranberries demonstrate exquisite pop craftsmanship ("Just My Imagination," not to be confused with the Temptations' classic) and ferocity of spirit ("Animal Instinct"). In any case, the passionate Parisian audience at this show amplifies the band's thorny glories while, paradoxically, easing them into a comfortable encounter with stardom.
