Notes About Jar Cakes
Use only wide-mouth jars. Filling the jars can be tricky because you want the cakes to bake to within one-quarter to one-half inch of the rim. Make one test cake by filling one jar halfway to ensure you have the right time and temperature. Do this at higher altitudes, too.
For half-pint jars, use one-half cup batter and bake at 325 degrees F for about 30 minutes. For pint jars, use 1 cup batter and bake at 325 degrees F for 55 to 60 minutes. For 1 1/2-pint jars, try 1 3/4 cups batter and bake an hour or longer at 300 degrees F. A long cake tester is useful to verify doneness.
Adapt your favorite baking recipes to jars. Pound cakes or nut/fruit breads work best. Reduce the temperature 25 degrees because glass bakes hotter than metal.
Make sure there are no nicks or cracks on the lips of the canning jars. Wash jars, lids and rings in hot soapy water, then sterilize by boiling them for 15 minutes. The lids and rings are kept in hot water until you're ready to use them, but the jars are moved from the water and placed on a towel to air dry while you mix the batter.
The jars must be well greased with shortening or oil so the cake will slide out. After the cakes are done, you take them out of the oven, one by one, and put the lids and rings on them. Screw the lid tightly. As they cool on a bath towel on your counter, you should hear a "plink" sound indicating that they have sealed. If you don't hear it, check cooled jars by pressing down on the lid. It shouldn't move at all.
Refrigerate unsealed cakes or freeze them. Sealed cakes will keep in a cool, dry place for about six months. You can send one with a candle as a birthday cake.

Two Men With The BluesView This Product at Amazon
Two Men with the Blues is no more a jazz album than a blues album. It's neither jazz returning home, nor blues wandering out. What Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis have created is a compilation of jump-blues standards with arrangements that compliment both genres. While most of the album is careful not to take itself too seriously, there are a few tracks that seem to plod on for ages. The live set kicks off with the upbeat "Bright Lights, Big City," on which Marsalis' horn is crisp and full. "Ain't Nobody's Business" and "Basin Street Blues" are arranged slower than better known versions but still fit the album's context. Nelson and Marsalis's take on "Stardust" comes off as a bit too "Sinatra" for Nelson's thin vocal, while "Georgia on My Mind" just doesn't work at all. Still, the things that work, work well. "Night Life" and "Rainy Day Blues" are particular stand-outs, and "Caldonia" is a faithful homage to the Louis Jordan original (minus Jordan's screaming punch line, of course). The album ends riding high on closer "That's All," with its straight-out-of-a-New-Orleans-Baptist-church feel. Both Nelson and Marsalis are notorious for collaborating with other artists. Therefore, it seems only natural that they've found themselves on a project together. Overall, this set is well worth the wait. --Eric C.P. Martin

Originally aired on PBS's American Masters series, this evocative biography of the American composer, conductor, and de facto musical evangelist Leonard Bernstein offers a compelling balance of musical scholarship and personal insight. It's a fitting approach to the brilliant--and emotional--life and art of Bernstein, who elevated Broadway musical theater, demystified and democratized classical music for two generations of American children, and brought a true New Yorker's vigor and directness to his conducting.
Writer-director Susan Lacy establishes the film's sympathetic tone in its opening shots of Bernstein's funeral cortege as it passed along Manhattan streets in 1990. Underscoring the footage is the elegiac second movement of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, the final piece conducted by Bernstein at his final performance months earlier at Tanglewood. Scenes from that last concert (and a return to that slow, funereal march) are the inevitable conclusion of Lacy's film, which finds ample drama over the course of approximately two hours.
Lacy traces the arc of Bernstein's career from his earliest triumphs as a young conductor through his Broadway successes (culminating in West Side Story), his historic network television outreach, the frustrations encountered over his "serious" compositions (often derided, ultimately vindicated), and his autumnal work abroad conducting the Vienna Philharmonic. Bernstein's private demons--anguish over the tradeoff between a conductor's glory and a composer's productivity, the ridicule invited by his impassioned political activism, the conflict between his devotion to his family and his bisexuality, bouts of depression suffered in his later years--are addressed as well.
Excellent archival footage and a literate script are enhanced by interviews with his brother and children; collaborators including Jerome Robbins, Isaac Stern, and Stephen Sondheim; and conductors including John Mauceri, Seiji Ozawa, and Michael Tilson Thomas. --Sam Sutherland

The third in the Notes Alive series with the Minnesota Orchestra is another fine introduction for kids to the arts. This computer-animated version of the Dr. Seuss story about the mood of colors (narrated by Holly Hunter) is combined with footage of a concert symphony. We follow a boy and his dog juggling his various moods, something soaring like a bird ("a blue day") or moping around the house ("a gray day"). The music is outstanding; Richard Einhorn created a new composition, which focuses on the individuality of instruments in the 30-minute piece. A percussive, hand-clapping sequence is quite fun. The animation doesn't seem as fresh in this day and age of A Bug's Life--it's quite bulky. Yet the film is brisk enough to entertain the youngsters and they will undoubtedly ask questions about the various instruments shown.
There's also a 15-minute short on the making of the film. It includes interviews with the animators, the composer, and, most notably, with Theodore Geisel's (Dr. Seuss) wife, who talks about her husband's influences and gives a tour of their house.
