Frosty Mud Pie
20 chocolate wafers
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 quart coffee ice cream, softened
1 1/2 cups fudge ice cream topping
Whipped cream
Slivered almonds
Crush wafers. Pour wafers into medium bowl and add butter. Mix well. Press into 9-inch pie plate. Spread crust with ice cream. Put into freezer until ice cream is firm. Top with fudge sauce. Store in freezer until firm.
To serve, slice pie and serve on chilled dessert plate. Top with whipped cream and slivered almonds.

This is the type of collection that presents an interesting dilemma for parents: The kids will love it and be entertained and occupied for hours. The only drawback is that you will have to hear it. Like most things that appeal to kids, there's something initially charming that soon loses its luster. Great sing-along classics are featured like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Jingle Bells." "Up on the House Top" unfortunately has audience participation built right into it with its "click click click" line. "O Tannenbaum" is rather touching, but the inclusion of "Winter Wonderland" just might leave some children asking all the wrong questions. --Steve Gdula

But where Esquivel was possessed by wackiness and whimsy, Mancini played things fairly straight and still managed to create a sound that defined his career and an era. Sadly, the selections here are pedestrian, even by the well-trodden holiday boulevard standards. "White Christmas," "The Little Drummer Boy," and "The Christmas Song" all benefit nonetheless from Mancini's genius for timing and dynamics. Even the mundane "Frosty the Snowman" gets some new life breathed into him thanks to Mancini's arrangement, and "Carols for Another Christmas" is a good example of Mancini's hip restraint. This frightens Frosty, who enlists the help of amateur magician Holly and her friend Charles to stop the old coot. Made in 1992, Frosty Returns has an animation style that looks like a cross between the old Schoolhouse Rock and Peanuts cartoons, with voice talent that includes Jonathan Winters, Andrea Martin, Jan Hooks, Brian Doyle-Murray, and John Goodman as Frosty. The story may be divisive, pitting children against adults and a pro-snow contingent against anti-snow people, but the songs are catchy and the message is one that ultimately empowers kids.
