See's Fudge
In the West, See's Candy Stores are famous. This is the only recipe which has been made public. The rest are still secret.
3 (6 ounce) packages chocolate chips
2 cups nuts (any kind)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup butter or margarine
Let chocolate chips, nuts, vanilla and butter stand until room temperature in a large bowl (overnight is fine).
4 cups granulated sugar
20 large marshmallows, cut up
1 (13 ounce) can evaporated milk
Bring sugar and milk to boil in a large saucepan and keep at a rolling boil for 8 minutes. Dump this all at one time over the chocolate mixture. Add marshmallows and stir vigorously by hand until chocolate bits and butter are melted and mixture is smooth. Pour into a 15 x 13-inch cake pan or a 13 x 9-inch pan. Cool and refrigerate for 24 hours before eating. It will keep well in the refrigerator and will last...and last...and last.

So how does Chris Tomlin follow up his 2006 Artist and Male Vocalist of the Year Dove Awards? Easy... he goes out and releases his best work to date with See the Morning, a superb collection of worship-flavored tracks that demonstrate Tomlin continues refining his art. As with the previous Arriving, producer Ed Cash is firmly at the helm and masterfully blending Tomlin's smooth vocals and his band's chiming guitars and rock-steady rhythm. The extensive road work that Tomlin and his band have done certainly shows in how tight See the Morning sounds. In fact, tracks like "Glorious" and "Awesome Is the Lord Most High" may even lose a little luster compared with how they sound live on Passion: Everything Glorious. No matter, as this release is much more about songwriting than it is about energy. For Tomlin, verse and chorus have never flowed smoother and sweeter than on "Glory in the Highest" and "How Can I Keep from Singing?" and first single "Made to Worship." Tomlin also offers a nice cover of Brenton Brown's "Everlasting God," slightly slower than Lincoln Brewster's fiery version on Let the Praises Ring but equally rewarding. Further highlights include the atmospheric "Uncreated One" and a new and pleasing twist on the classic "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)." Start to finish, See the Morning is Tomlin's most complete release and a strong argument for calling him one of this generation's finest songwriters in the modern church. --Michael Lyttle

While not the first to marry different ages of musical instruments, Davis and his cohorts use them with imagination and an intensity that gives new life and drama to this rather inert genre. For material, Mannheim Steamroller asked their fans to choose their favorite holiday selections and vote on their Web site. The results of the poll are a fine mix of old and new--with slightly more emphasis on the modern--ranging from the bracing "Fum, Fum, Fum," a traditional Catalan carol, to Tchaikovsky's "Faeries" from The Nutcracker. Mannheim Steamroller imbues this beloved song with an almost militaristic edge, grounding it with an ominous tuba that gives the usually fey "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" an edgy tension. "Winter Wonderland" is a spectacular work, bordering on prog rock, as if Emerson, Lake & Palmer had re-formed to whip up a winter blizzard gone amok. While most of the Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas albums are largely instrumental, Davis has employed the considerable talents of University of Michigan's Glee Club to sing on "O Tannenbaum," respectfully fading their elegant, full vocals around the pristine voice of Johnny Mathis, elevating this German carol to a cinematic peak. That's a good indication of Halicki's priorities in the original car-crunching, tire-squealing drive-in classic Gone in 60 Seconds. Halicki wrote, produced, starred, and did all of his own extraordinary stunt driving in the picture, the story of a career car thief who makes a deal to steal 48 cars for an overseas smuggler. OK, it's not Shakespeare. The plot is perfunctory at best, and Halicki's all thumbs when it comes to directing his wooden cast, but he gives a crash course in the mechanics of the car-theft biz and tops it off with one of the greatest car chases of all time: a 40-minute finale that roars through five Los Angeles-basin towns and destroys 93 cars in the process. It's a masterpiece of stunt driving, down-and-dirty photography, and sharp, furious cutting; the unsung hero of the picture is editor Warner Leighton, who paces the film perfectly and never lets it stall. Don Coscarelli directs and Bruce Campbell stars as the King of Camp in this intentionally over-the-top schlockfest. Bubba Ho-Tep is partially about Elvis Presley and partially about the title character, an Egyptian cowboy zombie, but mostly it is about camp. The movie is equal parts story and back story. We learn through narration and flashback how Elvis didn't really die, ending up instead in a rest home in East Texas with JFK (played by Ossie Davis), who was dyed black and had his brain removed, presumably for reasons of national security. Campbell and Davis realize that something strange is going on when their rest-home compatriots start dropping off suspiciously. The whole movie leads up to a final showdown to the death with the Egyptian cowboy zombie who has been sucking the souls of their fellow residents because he thought no one would notice. The movie unfolds a bit slowly; it is, after all, a geriatrics-fight-Egyptian-cowboy-zombie movie. However, one wishes this self-conscious movie's pacing took its cue from the atypically fast-moving zombie instead of from the senior-citizen Elvis and JFK. In the end, though, Campbell is flawless as the aged King; his accent, intonations, glasses, and trademark karate are at the same time sincere and over the top. --Brian Saltzman
