Mrs. Field's Pecan Pie Brownies
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons molasses
2 tablespoons dark Karo syrup
2 egg yolks, beaten
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup pecan pieces
16 pecan halves
1 tablespoon dark Karo syrup (for pecan halves)
Mix pecan halves with 1 tablespoon of dark Karo syrup and set aside.
Beat shortening with brown sugar until creamy. Add molasses, 2 tablespoons dark Karo syrup and pecan pieces; blend. Beat in egg yolks and vanilla extract.
Measure flour, add baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
To batter slowly mix in dry ingredients until all ingredients are blended well.
Place in an 8-inch square greased baking pan. Top batter with arranged pecan halves that have been mixed with the dark Karo syrup.
Place baking pan in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F for 25 to 30 minutes.

This compilation gets into the spirit of things right away with "Love Stinks" (J. Geils Band) and "Tainted Love" (Soft Cell). It follows up with more of the same: "You Give Love a Bad Name" (performed by metal band Atreyu, and "Used to Love Her (But I Had to Kill Her)" from the ska-punk group the Voodoo Glow Skulls.
Fortunately, this disc grows more interesting toward the midway point with Nouvelle Vague's Brazilian-style cover of "I'll Melt with You" and alterna-lounge act Pink Martini's "Let's Never Stop Falling in Love. The latter melts seamlessly into the lovely instrumental, "Assassination Tango." It's on these more exotic tracks that this compilation shines--if only there were a few more. Billy Paul might've been just an archetypal '70s Philly-soul love man with a slightly over-formal jazz-trained voice, melodramatic arrangements, and one great cheating song (the title track), but there was a side of him that was a revolutionary dressed as a Casanova: some of his best crooning was in the service of black power. Curtis Mayfield's early solo work is the obvious template for epics such as "Black Wonders of the World," but recasting Paul McCartney's "Let 'Em In" as a civil rights anthem is a stroke of genius only a populist like Billy Paul could've had. The lighter, more apolitical songs here sometimes stagger under their Gamble-Huff production, but when Paul gets a chance to cut loose and jazz up a Dylan tune with a piano trio, it's a treat. --Douglas Wolk

This is a problem, dramatically speaking, because what's compelling about someone who twinkles all the time? The costumes are by Bob Mackie (duh), the choreography by Chicago director Rob Marshall. The story quickly shifts over to Claudia (Jean Marie Barnwell), the middle child of the family. Of the three kids, she's the only girl, a straight-A student, and the one their mom relies on to help her with the chores. Claudia feels both taken for granted and neglected, so she devises a plan for her and her younger brother (who's got some money because he cheats at cards) to run away and have adventures. Her plan includes camping out in the Metropolitan Museum, which happens to be the same museum that bought the enigmatic sculpture. While the family searches for the missing kids, Claudia becomes obsessed with solving the secret of the statue. Is it or isn't it a genuine Michelangelo? Like Claudia herself, the script is smart, and it never condescends. The direction is equally smart, and the cast is universally good--which is saying something considering there are so many child actors involved. With messages like "feelings matter as much as learning" and "if you believe in yourself, then you don't need to cheat," From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler is an excellent way for a family to spend time together in front of the TV. This feline/canine duo is quickly on the scent when a local man is found murdered at the bottom of the lake. All evidence points to Dr. Blair Bainbridge (Linden Ashby) a town newcomer who moves in next to Harry, and, it turns out, has buried some secrets of his own. While local sheriffs try to unmask the murderer, Harry falls for Dr. Bainbridge in spite of his questionable character. As the plot thickens, so do the amusing antics and one-liners from Mrs. Murphy and Tucker. It's up to the animals to solve the mystery, despite their "pet peeves" over the bumbling efforts of humans. Lake is terrific as the low-key, likeable, but lonely Harry, and the rest of the cast deliver decent performances, but the biggest kudos go to our furry friends who save the day in a surprise ending that is certain to please family audiences. --Lynn Gibson

With only a few plastic parts to snap in place, and with the three AA batteries already installed, the Mrs. Goodbee Talking Dollhouse is ready to go moments after it comes out of the box. Depending on how old your child is, you may need to apply the decorative decals yourself. There's 66 of them, including family photos for the walls, a shopping list to hang on the fridge, and dishes for inside the dishwasher.
When your little girl is ready to play, she simply turns the unit on and rings the doorbell, which will cause the dollhouse to come to life. Mrs. Goodbee's eyes snap open, her lips light up, and she sings a welcoming song. As your child plays, eight audio activation points throughout the house keep the experience interactive. Fun Details and Additional Friends
Even beyond the great sound effects, the Mrs. Goodbee house is full of thoughtful details that keep playtime interesting. Windows in the bedroom move up and down to reveal different scenes for daytime and nighttime. A lever by the oven reveals muffins, a pie, or a turkey cooking. With its unique fold-out design and six rooms on each side, there's plenty of room for multiple children to play at the same time. And when it's time to clean up, simply fold the house up with your child's dolls inside to save space.
With all the use this dollhouse is sure to get, we are concerned that its construction may not hold up over time. The hinges and platforms seem sturdy, but they are made out of fairly thin plastic. Additionally, there aren't a lot of accessories that come with the dollhouse. This may not be an issue if your child already has dolls that will fit in this dollhouse, or if you invest in one or more of the fun accessory packs, such as Table Manners, A Book at Bedtime, or the Pet Playground.
