Georgia Country Ham
1 (10 to 12 pound) Georgia country ham
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup bourbon or sherry
1 cup water
Have the hock cut off ham so that it will fit into a roaster. Soak ham overnight in cold water and scrub the ham with a stiff brush. Change water a couple times to get rid of the excess salt.
Mix sugar, bourbon and water; press into the fat of ham. Cover tightly with foil in roaster and bake at 200 degrees F for 8 hours.

The two songs represent opposite ends of the emotional spectrum--sultry and kittenish on the one hand, solitary and ruminative on the other--but they also offer clues that the cutesy, crazy, easy listening Melua of Mike Batt's mentorship may be gradually acceding to the full bloom of self-determined musical adulthood. Melua's songs are often the more fretful and organic--the ghostly title track and the lovely "I Cried for You" are especially recommended, while the bluesier numbers (particularly the cover of the classic "Blues in the Night") seem shoehorned in gratuitously to match an anticipated demographic. Batt's contributions are melodic, memorably buoyant, and childlike. The Chinese-flavored "Nine Million Bicycles" and the naggingly catchy "Halfway up the Hindu Kush" are both charming despite their naïve pseudo-ethnicity and currently offer, particularly when compared to something as ponderously wooly as "Spider's Web," a necessary fun counterbalance to Melua's burgeoning compositional skills. At this stage, Piece by Piece fits together nicely like a little jigsaw puzzle. And even if it didn't, Melua would still sound simply ambrosial singing from a washing machine repair manual. --Kevin Maidment

the influence of Orthodox chant. It is Truly Meet is one of many pieces by composers who left
the USSR and continued to create abroad. Shen Khar Venakhi is a lovely 12th century Georgian
hymn in honor of the Mother of God. The numerous repetitions of Amen, Alleluia and Gospodi
pomilui ( Lord have mercy ) throughout the compilation create a unifying theme.
All the pieces and performances are infused with a solemn and deeply devotional quality.
The singing is spacious and warm, creating an atmosphere of holiness and benediction. The
intention was to weave hymns and verses into a seamless tapestry in which the whole is greater
than the sum of its parts, and the individual elements of the compilation become movements in
a choral symphony of timeless beauty.

Blissfully hilarious and romantic, this Witch is blessed with great chemistry between March and Lake (who never looked lovelier), dryly funny one-liners, and a scene-stealing performance by Cecil Kellaway as Lake's perennially drunk warlock dad. Written and directed by talented newcomer Guy Ritchie, this is one of those movies that was destined to become an instant cult classic à la Reservoir Dogs. Although some comparisons were drawn between Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino, it would be unfair to discount the brilliant wit of the story and the innovative camerawork that the director brings to his debut feature. Not since The Krays has there been such an accurate depiction of the East End and its more colorful characters. Indicative of the social stratosphere in London, Ritchie's movie is a hilarious and at times touching account of friendships and loyalty. The director and his mates (who make up most of the cast) clearly are enjoying themselves here. This comes across in some shining performances, in particular from ex-footballer Vinnie Jones (Big Chris) and an over-the-top Vas Blackwood (as Rory Breaker), who very nearly steals the show. Full of quirky vernacular and clever tension-packed action sequences, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a triumph--a perfect blend of intelligence, humor, and suspense. --Jeremy Storey
