Easy Tamale Loaf
1 pound ground beef
1 can olives, sliced (optional)
1 can cream style corn
3/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1 onion, chopped
1 can tomato sauce
1/2 cup cornmeal
Brown ground beef with onion in skillet, stirring until crumbly; drain. Mix in 1/2 cup water and remaining ingredients. Pour into casserole and bake at 350 degrees F for 1 hour.

Truth be told, exotica music's popularity was short-lived (only to resurface again with the '90s lounge culture), and many would claim Yma Sumac was merely American housewife Amy Camus spelling her name backwards. With composer-husband Moises Vivanco, Sumac created a hybrid jazz, mambo, and world music that was the perfect showpiece for her vocal pyrotechnics. She scats, she trills, she bellows, but--mostly--she entertains. But what makes these episodes work is not their historical sweep but their emphasis on riveting details (such as the rattle of a plane as the paratroopers wait to leap, or a flower in the buttonhole of a German soldier) and procedures (from military tactics to the workings of bureaucratic hierarchies). The scope of this miniseries (10 episodes, plus an actual documentary filled with interviews with surviving veterans) allows not only a thoroughness impossible in a two-hour movie, but also captures the wide range of responses to the stress and trauma of war--fear, cynicism, cruelty, compassion, and all-encompassing confusion. The result is a realism that makes both simplistic judgments and jingoistic enthusiasm impossible; the things these soldiers had to do are both terrible and understandable, and the psychological price they paid is made clear. The writing, directing, and acting are superb throughout. The cast is largely unknown, emphasizing the team of actors as a whole unit, much like the regiment; Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston play the central roles of two officers with grit and intelligence. Band of Brothers turns a vast historical event into a series of potent personal experiences; it's a deeply engrossing and affecting accomplishment. --Bret Fetzer

The instructor is Seamus Kerrigan, who runs the Kerrigan School of Traditional Irish Dance in Ireland. A trim, no-nonsense man, Kerrigan couldn't be called a sparkling camera presence, but in this case, his unaffected style works for the beginner; none of that Riverdance-type flash. Kerrigan, accompanied by a couple of his dancers in a very modest-looking studio, slowly walks you through the basic steps of the light jig, the reel, and other steps. And he does it the only way most of us two-left-footed types can learn: by slowly repeating the pattern as he does it, counting each and every step, and doing it over and over, like you would in a class. You may find yourself walking with a little hop and hearing Kerrigan's soft brogue counting 1, 2, 3 in your head--and if you do, that's a great sign you're on your way to high-stepping with the best of them. --Anne Hurley

The fur, however, has not dropped from Olympus but from the hand of a millionaire (Edward Arnold) who has just tossed it from a nearby roof to punish his wife. But as if it were a magic fleece (the mythical reference is almost certainly intended by the erudite Sturges), it makes its wearer invincible, conferring an aura of prosperity, celebrity, and power on the previously average working girl. No folk tale is complete without a prince: Sturges's is the millionaire's son, Ray Milland, who is trying to pass as an apprentice stockbroker. Directed with a light, elegant touch by Mitchell Leisen, the film lacks the crazy energy it would have had under Sturges's own hand, but this remains one of the great screwball comedies (in a year that also saw The Awful Truth and Nothing Sacred). --Dave Kehr

Embracing Vista
The now fully certified Easy Media Creator 10, is the ideal complement and enhancement to Microsoft Vista. The product now sports a stunning new "Aero" User Interface design in keeping with the visual appeal of the latest Operating System. Perhaps more importantly, Easy Media Creator offers new features and capabilities that are specifically designed to naturally extend the digital-media functionality of Vista. Creator now also includes new Vista gadgets, which make it convenient for users to quickly convert audio and video files to a favorite file type directly on the Vista desktop. In the case of the audio gadget, users can also use it to capture audio from various sources including streaming Web audio.
Mobile Companion
Easily Media Creator 10 adds a number of features to allow users to maximize the use of their multi-media enabled devices. This includes a feature for quickly fixing photos snapped using a device's built-in digital cameras called Mobile Photo Doctor. In addition, Mobile PhotoFit ensures digital photos are displayed accurately based on the capabilities of the device and a synchronizing tool enables users to prepare content for automatic transfer the next time a device is connected.
Enhancing Audio
For audiophiles, Easy Media Creator makes improvements to AutoMix a feature that automatically generates a collection of songs that sound great together based on a single Ôseed' song selected by the user. The resulting collection can be saved to the Hard Drive as a playlist, used to create a music CD, DVD, or sent to a mobile player. DVD Music Album, the feature that allows users to create 50-hour music DVDs complete with on-screen navigation has been enhanced with a range of new professionally-designed menu templates. Easy Media Creator also now offers a Batch Audio Converter that saves users time by automatically converting a wide range of audio file types into a single desired format (such as .MP3). The program also provides users with the ability to use disc drives in parallel so they can very quickly rip their entire CD collection. In addition, Creator's Sound Editor now supports VST plugins to allow users to enhance their audio editing and mixing capabilities.
Data Protection
Creator 10 lets users backup files to predefined archive categories such as Email, Financial, Music, and Photos or create their own custom categories. Special features allow users to backup only files that have changed since the last known backup or automatically prompt for a backup when an external Hard Drive is connected. Creator supports a range of backup devices and media including Blu-ray Discs and HD DVD discs. Large files can be automatically spanned across multiple discs as required. Finding a file that's stored on a disc is now a whole lot easier thanks to the new Disc Gallery feature that creates a catalog on the user's PC of all the offline content stored on CDs and DVDs. In addition, Creator now includes a feature to enable users to archive non-protected iPod music and video files to a PC even if that PC is not paired with the device.

Video Editing and Publishing
