Walnut Coconut Cream Fruitcake
1 cup candied cherries, halved
1 (4 ounce) container candied pineapple slices, cut
into thin (about 1/8-inch) wedges
1 cup golden raisins
2 tablespoons brandy
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2/3 cup butter, at room temperature
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 large eggs, separated
1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon rind
1 cup sweetened cream of coconut (canned)
2 cups coarsely broken walnuts
In large bowl stir together cherries, pineapple slices, raisins and brandy; let stand an hour or longer.
On wax paper, or in small bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg.
In a large bowl, cream butter, sugar and vanilla extract; Beat in egg yolks until blended. Stir in lemon rind. Add 1/3 of flour mixture and 1/2 of coconut cream and stir until smooth. Repeat stir remaining flour until smooth.
Beat egg whites until stiff; fold in to batter. Pour over fruit mixture, then stir in walnuts. Spoon into well buttered pans and spread to smooth. Set a shallow pan of hot water on lowest oven rack or floor of oven. Bake at 300 degrees F on rack below center of oven until cake tester inserted into center comes out clean - 2 to 2 1/2 hours for 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch pan, or 1 1/2 to 2 hours for small pans. Cool on racks. Wrap in foil or plastic wrap. Store in refrigerator.
This fruitcake slices beautifully, and tastes good when cold.
Makes 2 large loaves or 5 small loaves.

The ninth season of Little House on the Prairie was re-invented as Little House: A New Beginning after star Michael Landon decided to leave the series. (He continued to produce, direct and write for the show.) The first episode began with the departure of Landon's Pa Ingalls, who fell on hard economic times and moved his family to the city . He returned for just one harrowing two-parter, "Home Again," in which son Albert (Matthew Laborteaux) battled a morphine addiction. In Landon's absence, it was up to the other denizens of Walnut Grove to provide drama, and provide they did. The meddling, gossipy Harriet Oleson (Katherine MacGregor) played town villain, followed by her whiny adopted daughter Nancy (Allison Balson), who was annoying but never as deliciously wicked as her predecessor Nellie (Alison Arngrim, who makes a welcome guest appearance). Laura (Melissa Gilbert) is all grown up and living with husband Almanzo (Dean Butler) and their daughter Rose. The show also cast a pre-scandal Shannen Doherty as Jenny Wilder to fill the spunky young protagonist role vacated by Gilbert.
Little House continued its run of darker stories in this season, from a crazed father (Robert Loggia) who shoots his daughter and wife to a suicide attempt by Jenny after her father dies, filling in other episodes with fluffy schmaltz featuring some of the other townsfolk (you know they're desperate when an entire show is about a wayward orangutan). The series also liked to feature outcasts teaching the town lessons in tolerance: in one case a circus midget can't get a job because of his looks, and a "wild boy" turns out just to be an abused mute. Despite its attempts to fill the void left by Pa and Ma Ingalls with new characters, however, the long-running series lost its spark without Landon and did not last after the ninth season.
The boxed set includes an 86-page booklet: Little House on the Prairie A-Z by historian Patrick Loubatiere, who also interviews Dean Butler and Alison Arngrim in the DVD bonus features. The interviews don't reveal much, other than Loubatiere's smugness for knowing more about Little House than the stars of the show. --Ellen A. Kim

Now that the series that dusted off late-19th-century American prairie life for 1970s viewers has itself been dusted off, keep your kerchief handy. The double feature of "Christmas at Plum Creek" and "The Creeper of Walnut Grove" succeeds, as executive producer Michael Landon and the warm, fuzzy behind-the-scenes folks so obviously intended, at stirring the sap within. "Plum Creek" carries the nostalgic back to the early seasons, when Laura was still a genuine half-pint, braids bobbing on either side of her head. Christmas is coming, and clan Ingalls is intent on surprising one another, their meager means notwithstanding. Secrets and bargain-driving abound, but in the main story line Ma wants a stove and Laura sells her most prized possession, pony Bunny, to nasty Nellie Olsen to buy it for her. When the magic morning arrives, her sacrifice is made bittersweet by Pa's gift of a saddle. "The Creeper" fast-forwards a few years and includes some familiar townspeople, bespectacled teacher Miss Beetle and Dr. Baker among them. Timothy, the town's top student and brightest prospect for a college scholarship to study medicine, turns amateur thief when his pa is laid up and no longer able to tend to the farm. He makes off with a pie, some jam and bread from the mercantile, and a hen in hopes of helping along his father's recovery, but junior sleuths Laura and Andy Garvey are hot on his trail. When the jig is up and Timothy confesses to Pa, the town's good folks come together to pitch in for the foundering family. That way, Timothy can accept the scholarship he's made Walnut Grove proud by winning. Both 46-minute episodes prove timeless--guaranteed to warm hearts and slake the thirst of anyone with a taste for sentimentality. --Tammy La Gorce

The Tivoli Model One has been praised far and wide for its high-quality sound, small size, and cool, retro styling. We got our hands on a sample unit and came away impressed, just as many others have. Anyone who wants a compact, stylish radio with surprisingly good sound should give the Model One a look.
Design
In many ways, the Model One is the culminating achievement of famed audio engineer Henry Kloss's long career. Designed from the ground up by Kloss, who passed away in 2002, the radio exudes understated class and elegant simplicity. We received the Platinum Series Model One, which features a hand-lacquered, high gloss dark walnut cabinet that is simply gorgeous. According to Tivoli, the genuine wood casing isn't just for looks as it provides "an acoustically inert housing" that maximizes the speaker's sound quality. At just over 8 inches wide, 4.5 inches high, and 5.25 inches deep, the Model One is about the size of a toaster turned on its side-- plenty small to fit on a desk, dresser, or nightstand.
The Model One's single rotary dial handles tuning for both AM and FM stations. It feels sturdy and smooth in the hand. The dial is designed to move between stations at a speed that is a bit slower than the speed at which the user turns the knob-- a 5 to 1 ratio, to be exact. This "ratio" dialing technique makes it far easier to tune stations accurately and quickly. It's a nice touch that sets the unit apart from other desktop radios.
The tuner band selection and volume dials are easy to control. Plus, they're well designed for hands of all sizes. A small LED power indicator, as well as an LED that helps determine signal strength, are positioned between the dials. We liked the light-colored face and dark lettering printed on the Platinum Series model we reviewed; it made for easy operation in dimly-lit rooms. The Model One's single, 3" driver is protected by a handsome metal speaker cover. Tivoli adds that the speaker is enhanced by a "multi-stage frequency contouring circuit that adjusts the speaker's output over half-octave increments." The result, Tivoli claims, is "musically accurate tonal balance and bass response."
The back of the unit features a coaxial antenna jack for the included FM antenna wire. While the Model One also has an internal FM antenna, Tivoli recommends using the supplied external one for tricky tuning in locales with a lot of stations crammed together. There's a handy switch for switching between the internal and external antennae. A standard 3.5mm headphone jack is also provided, as is a 3.5mm auxiliary line in port for plugging in your iPod or other music device. If you want to use the Model One as a component tuner-- not a bad idea given the overall quality and accuracy of the tuning circuitry-- Tivoli has provided a 3.5mm output port. The back panel also sports separate ports for AC and DC power, making the unit a great choice for boating or RV use.
Listening Pleasure
As with the Tivoli iPal portable speaker system, we were initially skeptical about the performance of a small, one-speaker unit that only offers monaural sound. The reality is that most small two-speaker systems don't allow you to place the speakers very far apart anyway, and the Model One's rich, resonant sound more than made up for its lack of true stereo separation. Plus, the Model One is a single, elegant box with no annoying speaker cords.
While the Model One isn't designed to provide earth-shattering sound at high volume, it produces surprising clarity and fullness at normal listening levels. When turned all the way up, the unit's rich sound persists and we suspect that Tivoli engineered the Model One's volume level to max out before any distortion arises. If you don't need a lot of volume, the Model One delivers. As with the iPal, we were left scratching our heads and wondering how such great sound could come from such a little box.
The Model One's tuning accuracy is also impressive; we were able to dial in stations we didn't even know existed. Tivoli says this is due to the unit's discrete-component FM tuner technology, which was originally developed for cellular telephones. Whatever Tivoli has done here, they did it right; closely-spaced stations are a breeze to tune.

Reputed to be one of the most stable operating systems around and based on the highly refined Berkeley 4.4 BSD Unix kernel, FreeBSD is a worthy choice for computers that must have maximum reliability and robustness. Many of the Web's most heavily trafficked sites have FreeBSD on the back end. But FreeBSD is more than an ideal operating system for local area network (LAN) and Internet servers. This is the latest in a series of FreeBSD upgrades that have made this variety of Unix extremely competitive with Linux in the desktop workstation market. FreeBSD makes a very good desktop operating system if you're familiar with the Unix way of doing things.
For a power user's product, FreeBSD installs remarkably easily on practically any IBM-compatible personal computer; the distributor claims it will even install and run on a 386SX. We had no trouble installing the operating system on a homemade Pentium II clone, and chose a workstation configuration from a menu of predefined setup schemes. Aside from the graphical workstation setup, the menu included options for network servers, software-development workstations, and a variety of other machine roles. (We later chose to configure the K Desktop Environment--KDE--on top of the X server.) The only problem we had was in getting FreeBSD to recognize the mouse, but this was resolved after a little experimentation. Installation is far from simple, but it's not nearly as bad as you may have heard.
