Mrs. Crowther's Applesauce Cake

Here is a gumdrop cake that my grandmother made. We called it fruitcake in the family, but the official title is Mrs. Crowther's Applesauce Cake.
1 egg
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups applesauce
2 teaspoons baking soda
4 tablespoons warm water
1 tablespoon baking powder
2 teaspoons cocoa
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup raisins
1 cup walnuts
1 cup gumdrops (omit green and black ones)
1 cup dates (our family omitted them)
1 cup maraschino cherries
Sift cocoa, baking powder with flour.
Cream butter; add sugar and spices. Add beaten egg, then applesauce.
Dissolve baking soda in warm water. Add alternating with flour mix and fruit mix. (If you use the large gumdrops, cut them into small pieces.)
Bake in paper lined loaf pans (either wax or parchment paper) at 325 degrees F for 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 hours.

Just as two super-sexy, professional killers are inexorably drawn to each other, so is the Mr. and Mrs. Smith soundtrack inexorably drawn to the obvious. Husband and wife shootouts? This compilation gets into the spirit of things right away with "Love Stinks" (J. Geils Band) and "Tainted Love" (Soft Cell). It follows up with more of the same: "You Give Love a Bad Name" (performed by metal band Atreyu, and "Used to Love Her (But I Had to Kill Her)" from the ska-punk group the Voodoo Glow Skulls.
Fortunately, this disc grows more interesting toward the midway point with Nouvelle Vague's Brazilian-style cover of "I'll Melt with You" and alterna-lounge act Pink Martini's "Let's Never Stop Falling in Love. The latter melts seamlessly into the lovely instrumental, "Assassination Tango." It's on these more exotic tracks that this compilation shines--if only there were a few more. The middle of the disc is romantic--the rest feels like action movie cliché. --Leah Weathersby

This is a problem, dramatically speaking, because what's compelling about someone who twinkles all the time? The costumes are by Bob Mackie (duh), the choreography by Chicago director Rob Marshall. Frankweiler, she's a very wealthy individual auctioning off a statue that may or may not have been sculpted by Michelangelo. The story quickly shifts over to Claudia (Jean Marie Barnwell), the middle child of the family. Of the three kids, she's the only girl, a straight-A student, and the one their mom relies on to help her with the chores. Claudia feels both taken for granted and neglected, so she devises a plan for her and her younger brother (who's got some money because he cheats at cards) to run away and have adventures. Her plan includes camping out in the Metropolitan Museum, which happens to be the same museum that bought the enigmatic sculpture. While the family searches for the missing kids, Claudia becomes obsessed with solving the secret of the statue. Is it or isn't it a genuine Michelangelo? Like Claudia herself, the script is smart, and it never condescends. The direction is equally smart, and the cast is universally good--which is saying something considering there are so many child actors involved. With messages like "feelings matter as much as learning" and "if you believe in yourself, then you don't need to cheat," From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler is an excellent way for a family to spend time together in front of the TV. Released amidst rumors of romance between costars Angelina Jolie and soon-to-be-divorced Brad Pitt, Mr. and Mrs. Smith offers automatic weapons and high explosives as the cure for marital boredom. The premise of this exhausting action-comedy (no relation to the 1941 Alfred Hitchcock comedy starring Carole Lombard and Robert Montgomery) is that the unhappily married Smiths (Pitt and Jolie) will improve their relationship once they discover their mutually-hidden identities as world-class assassins, but things get complicated when their secret-agency bosses order them to rub each other out. There's plenty of amusing banter in the otherwise disposable screenplay by Simon Kinberg (xXx: State of the Union, Fantastic Four), and director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) gives Pitt and Jolie a slick, glossy superstar showcase that's innocuous but certainly never boring.
