Dundee Cake
This is a famous old recipe. Serve it with tea, coffee or sherry. To serve it in the traditional style, put the entire loaf on a plate or cutting board, and slice it as you serve it.
1 1/2 cups currants
1 cup diced mixed candied fruit
1 cup dark seedless raisins
3/4 cup light seedless raisins
1/2 cup halved candied cherries
1/2 cup brandy
1 1/4 cups softened butter
1 cup granulated sugar
5 eggs
3 1/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 cup sliced blanched almonds
Soak fruits in brandy overnight.
Cream butter; add sugar, then cream again. Beat in eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add sifted dry ingredients.
Drain fruits; stir into batter. Pour into prepared 9 x 3 1/2-inch tube pan. Sprinkle with almonds; gently press into top of batter. Bake at 325 degrees F for 1 hour and 20 minutes to 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Cool in pan 30 minutes; remove from pan; cool on rack.

This 1986 comedy out of Australia is so old-fashioned in its romantic charm that one can't help but wonder what it would have looked like with Clark Gable and Carole Lombard in the leads. On the other hand, it's hard to imagine anyone besides Paul Hogan as the title character, a laid-back Aussie tracker who shows an American reporter (Linda Kozlowski) around bush country, then accompanies her to New York City. Sure, Hollywood has done the fish-out-of-water scenario to death in the last 20 years, and while this film has sufficient sport with the gimmick, it is largely driven by the principal characters and their developing love affair. Hogan cowrote the script and director Peter Faiman evokes the goofy, enchanted air of screwball comedies. The climactic scene, set in a subway station with scores of bystanders witnessing a conversation about relationship commitment, feels like vintage Capra. --Tom Keogh

At one point in the filming of this flawed epic, actor Charlton Heston (in the title role) got so mad at director Sam Peckinpah that he charged him on horseback with a cavalry sword and Peckinpah had to escape into the air on the camera crane. Yet Heston offered to give up his salary to get the studio to let Peckinpah finish the film. As it turned out, this story--of a headstrong Army professional who goes slightly crazy chasing a band of Apaches while shepherding a group of Confederate prisoners--was taken away from Peckinpah in the editing room and recut, so that much of the character development was eliminated from the crucial central section of the film. Still, it offers solid outings by Heston and Richard Harris (as his prisoner) and gives a hint of things to come in Peckinpah's next film, The Wild Bunch. --Marshall Fine
