Israeli Fondue
2 avocados, halved and stoned
3 teaspoons lemon juice
1 clove garlic, halved
3/4 cup dry white wine
3 cups grated Edam cheese
2 teaspoons flour
5 tablespoons thick sour cream
Cubes of sesame-coated French bread
Cubes of red and green bell pepper
Scoop out flesh from avocados into a bowl and mash until smooth with lemon juice. Rub the inside of the fondue pot with cut clove of garlic, then pour in wine and heat until bubbling. Over a gentle heat, stir in cheese and cook until melted, stirring frequently.
In a small bowl, blend flour smoothly with or sour cream, then add to cheese mixture with mashed avocados. Continue to cook for 4 to 5 minutes until thick and smooth, stirring frequently. Serve with cubes of bread and red and green pepper.

One cousin had a door slammed in his face, and another found his old house had been converted into a school. But the third, Bashir Al-Khairi, was met at the door by a young woman called Dalia, who invited them in.
This act of faith in the face of many years of animosity is the starting point for a true story of a remarkable relationship between two families, one Arab, one Jewish, amid the fraught modern history of the regio. In his childhood home, in the lemon tree his father planted in the backyard, Bashir sees dispossession and occupation; Dalia, who arrived as an infant in 1948 with her family from Bulgaria, sees hope for a people devastated by the Holocaust. As both are swept up in the fates of their people, and Bashir is jailed for his alleged part in a supermarket bombing, the friends do not speak for years. They finally reconcile and convert the house in Ramle into a day-care centre for Arab children of Israel, and a center for dialogue between Arabs and Jews. Now the dialogue they started seems more threatened than ever; the lemon tree died in 1998, and Bashir was jailed again, without charge.

With this book, he pursues the story into the homes and histories of the two families at its center, and up to the present day. Israeli Air Force is what's known as a "survey sim." These games attempt to loosely model several aircraft instead of simulating a single plane as realistically as possible. Here players get a chance to fly Israeli versions of the F-15, F-16D, Mirage III, Kfir, Lavi, and a few variants of the venerable F-4 Phantom. Most of the missions and campaigns in the game let players re-create famous battles like the Six-Day War or play out hypothetical wars of the future.
This simulation has some of the most controversial terrain graphics ever. Up high, everything is breathtaking. The ground really looks like a 3-D version of a detailed satellite map, and the game has more real-world terrain than any game released around the same time. Move down low, however, and the visuals change into a muddy, pixelated eyesore. Elevation changes are modeled in great detail, letting players snake down canyons and weave between mountaintops, but it isn't pretty.
Objects in the game--like the myriad planes, buildings, and ground vehicles--use a completely different graphics engine and look great, considering the game's relatively low resolution. Those who can get past the graphics issues will find that Israeli Air Force is an entertaining (if not utterly realistic) way to relive some of the most intense real-life missions a modern air force has ever accomplished. --T.
