Spinach Salad
1 handful fresh spinach (stems removed) for
each person, washed, drained well and dried
1 tablespoon bacon drippings
2 tablespoons diced bacon
1 teaspoon chopped shallots
1 teaspoon Grey Poupon mustard
2 teaspoons granulated sugar
2 ounces wine vinegar
1 ounce brandy
2 teaspoons shredded hard-boiled egg whites
Heat bacon grease in skillet. Add diced bacon and cook for several minutes. Add shallots and cook several more minutes. Then add mustard, sugar and wine vinegar. Mix well and let mixture simmer until very hot. Add brandy and flame. Pour over spinach, inverting skillet over salad bowl so that spinach is slightly steamed. Remove skillet and toss.
Serve on warm platter garnished with shredded egg whites.
Have a pepper grinder on the table.
Serves 2.

Popeye also discovers his long lost Pappy in the middle of it all, so with a band of his new friends, Popeye heads off to stop Bluto, and he's got the power of spinach, which Popeye detests, to busk Bluto right in the mush. Watch as Popeye mops the floor with punks in a burger joint, stops a greedy tax man, takes down a champion boxer, and even finds abandoned baby Swee'Pea. He's strong to the finich, 'cause he eats his spinach! Popeye nevertheless remains true to its origin on the comic page, and in those classic cartoons by Max Fleischer. The works of Wolf Kroeger, the production designer, who created an astonishingly detailed and rich set on the movie's Malta locations. Most of the action takes place in a ramshackle fishing hamlet Sweethaven where the streets run at crazy angles up the hillsides, and the rooming houses and saloons lean together dangerously. The performances given by Robin Williams, Shelley Duvall, Ray Walston, Paul Smith and Paul Dooley are standouts in this film. The film is a lot of fun, the music by Harry Nillson is comic-inspired and everything about POPEYE is an eye-feast. A great movie to rediscover all over again!
