Easy Chocolate Chip Cookies
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) margarine
1/4 cup solid shortening
2 eggs, beaten
2/3 cup light brown sugar
2/3 cup granulated sugar
4 cups Bisquick
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 (12 ounce) package chocolate chips
1/2 cup nuts, chopped
Melt margarine and shortening and add sugars. Stir in eggs and mix well. Stir in Bisquick, then vanilla extract, chocolate chips and nuts. Drop by teaspoonsful onto baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees F for about 8 minutes. Do not overbake or cookies will be hard. Cookies should be slightly soft and chewy; they won't be brown on top, only light brown on bottom.

But what makes these episodes work is not their historical sweep but their emphasis on riveting details (such as the rattle of a plane as the paratroopers wait to leap, or a flower in the buttonhole of a German soldier) and procedures (from military tactics to the workings of bureaucratic hierarchies). The scope of this miniseries (10 episodes, plus an actual documentary filled with interviews with surviving veterans) allows not only a thoroughness impossible in a two-hour movie, but also captures the wide range of responses to the stress and trauma of war--fear, cynicism, cruelty, compassion, and all-encompassing confusion. The result is a realism that makes both simplistic judgments and jingoistic enthusiasm impossible; the things these soldiers had to do are both terrible and understandable, and the psychological price they paid is made clear. The writing, directing, and acting are superb throughout. The cast is largely unknown, emphasizing the team of actors as a whole unit, much like the regiment; Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston play the central roles of two officers with grit and intelligence. The Cupcake Maker comes with four special cupcake mixes and frosting that are custom designed for use with this toy. The cake flavors include red velvet, chocolate, yellow, and cinnamon sugar; the frostings are chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and cream cheese flavored. These easy-to-use mixes, which contain no wheat ingredients--a definite plus for the gluten-free crowd--and require only water as an added ingredient. (Allergy alert: the mix does contain powdered eggs and powdered milk.)
The toy comes with everything your child needs to mix, bake, and decorate the cupcakes: a tiny mixing bowl, measuring spoon, water dropper, and miniature spatula for mixing the batter and frosting; a microwaveable container for baking the cupcakes; and a cupcake frosting gadget with a shape reminiscent of a KitchenAid standing mixer. And everything your little chef needs to get started is packaged in chic, girl-pleasing, contemporary pastels.
Mix It Up
Simply mix the cake mix with water using the provided measuring spoons and water dropper to reach the desired consistency (we found that a pudding-like consistency gives the best results), pour the batter into the cupcake paper, and put it in the plastic "baking dish," bake it in the microwave for about 30 seconds, and--voila!--out comes a completely baked cupcake. Because the cupcakes get pretty hot, an adult should handle them until they're cool enough to handle.
In the meantime, the frosting can be mixed up in the same manner. Again, it took us a few tries to get the proper consistency: it's especially important for the frosting to be, as suggested, the consistency of firm cookie dough to work properly with the cupcake froster.
Time to Decorate
The cupcake froster comes with a frosting tube with a plunger and decorator-type tip. Scoop the frosting into the tube with the miniature spatula and place it in the machine. (This step can prove almost impossible if the frosting is too runny.) Place the cooled cupcake below and push down the lever. The frosting machine simultaneously spins the cupcake and pushes out the frosting to create a spiral shape. Kids can put the finishing touches on with the included sprinkles or, as the "shortcut" cards suggest, with cut-up fruit or candy (you'll want to stock up on these beforehand). The finished cupcake is smaller than a regular cupcake and a bit larger than your standard mini cupcake.
The Taste Test
The quick-and-easy baking and frosting mixes make for a fun and simple introduction to baking, especially for kids who haven't already started growing their "kitchen legs." Kid-sized cooking utensils makes it fun for kids to use, and are much easier to use than Mom and Dad's larger and heavier utensils.
The cupcakes themselves cook quickly in the microwave, making for a fast turnaround that won't try younger kids' patience; but they also, to be honest, don't quite have the taste as the home-made cup cakes that mom or grandma makes. But admittedly, this opinion is formed by an adult palate. For the kids that cook the cupcakes, they will be flavored with the sweetness of do-it-yourself pride.
Adults will need to make sure, however, that the kids don't start out with aspirations to the Martha Stewart-like decorating job pictured on the box: after multiple tests, we found that the cupcake froster simply does not turn out perfectly dainty frosting spirals. This might prove disappointing, so kids should be prepared to expect more realistic, charmingly handmade results. Embracing Vista
The now fully certified Easy Media Creator 10, is the ideal complement and enhancement to Microsoft Vista. The product now sports a stunning new "Aero" User Interface design in keeping with the visual appeal of the latest Operating System. Perhaps more importantly, Easy Media Creator offers new features and capabilities that are specifically designed to naturally extend the digital-media functionality of Vista. Creator now also includes new Vista gadgets, which make it convenient for users to quickly convert audio and video files to a favorite file type directly on the Vista desktop. In the case of the audio gadget, users can also use it to capture audio from various sources including streaming Web audio.
Mobile Companion
Easily Media Creator 10 adds a number of features to allow users to maximize the use of their multi-media enabled devices. This includes a feature for quickly fixing photos snapped using a device's built-in digital cameras called Mobile Photo Doctor. In addition, Mobile PhotoFit ensures digital photos are displayed accurately based on the capabilities of the device and a synchronizing tool enables users to prepare content for automatic transfer the next time a device is connected.
Enhancing Audio
For audiophiles, Easy Media Creator makes improvements to AutoMix a feature that automatically generates a collection of songs that sound great together based on a single Ôseed' song selected by the user. The resulting collection can be saved to the Hard Drive as a playlist, used to create a music CD, DVD, or sent to a mobile player. DVD Music Album, the feature that allows users to create 50-hour music DVDs complete with on-screen navigation has been enhanced with a range of new professionally-designed menu templates. Easy Media Creator also now offers a Batch Audio Converter that saves users time by automatically converting a wide range of audio file types into a single desired format (such as .MP3). The program also provides users with the ability to use disc drives in parallel so they can very quickly rip their entire CD collection. In addition, Creator's Sound Editor now supports VST plugins to allow users to enhance their audio editing and mixing capabilities.
Data Protection
Creator 10 lets users backup files to predefined archive categories such as Email, Financial, Music, and Photos or create their own custom categories. Special features allow users to backup only files that have changed since the last known backup or automatically prompt for a backup when an external Hard Drive is connected. Creator supports a range of backup devices and media including Blu-ray Discs and HD DVD discs. Large files can be automatically spanned across multiple discs as required. Finding a file that's stored on a disc is now a whole lot easier thanks to the new Disc Gallery feature that creates a catalog on the user's PC of all the offline content stored on CDs and DVDs. In addition, Creator now includes a feature to enable users to archive non-protected iPod music and video files to a PC even if that PC is not paired with the device.
