1 cup margarine
2/3 cup molasses
1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoons lemon peel, grated
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon allspice
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon lemon extract
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
M&M Candies for decoration
Combine margarine, molasses, brown sugar, egg and lemon peel in large bowl. Beat at medium speed until smooth and creamy.
Sift all dry ingredients together and slowly add to liquid ingredients. Cover, refrigerate for three hours.
Roll out the dough on a lightly floured board and use a round cookie cutter. Place cutouts 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet. Pinch each cookie on the sides.
Position two pretzels at the top of each cookie to form antlers, then create eyes and noses with M&M candies.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 6 to 8 minutes. Remove from the pan immediately and cool.

The punnily-titled Let It Snow Baby… Let It Reindeer has much to offer fans of the band as well as listeners in search of an untraditional approach to Christmas music. Much of the material here was already released as their first holiday outing, 2003's Deck the Halls, Bruise Your Hand. Those ten tunes were a fun, indie spin on yuletide tunes by the feisty new kings of Christian pop-punk. Appended to those, we now have seven more songs recorded in 2007. In the intervening four years, the band's signed to Capitol Records and their sound is far more produced and polished. It's also clearly better, but what the group lacked for in talent early on, they made up for in spirit. The newer songs are all solid, and they really highlight how far Matt Thiessen has come as a frontman. The walking bass line to their version of "Sleigh Ride" might sound uninspired, but the tightly-wound Beach Boys-ish harmonies and explosive guitars more than make up for that. --Mike McGonigal

Simpsons creator Matt Groening helped create this delightful animated adaptation of the popular Christmas book. Originally shown on the Fox channel in 1999, Olive deals with a upstanding dreamer of a pooch (voiced expressively by Drew Barrymore) who hears Santa's angst when Blitzen breaks a leg just before the holiday, messing up Santa's delivery schedule. Olive hears Santa's quote about "all of the other reindeer" as "Olive, the other reindeer," and she is convinced she must go to the North Pole to help. Using equal parts traditional Christmas themes (unselfishness, the importance of being good instead of naughty) and Simpsons-esque humor (wordplay, contemporary cultural references), the 45-minute short is a refreshingly fun holiday pleaser. Purists may chafe at the action pieces and a scene in a rough 'n' tumble bar, but the filmmakers keep the spirit--and the unique look--of J. Otto Seibold's and Vivian Walsh's book. With some snappy songs (including one performed by R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe) and great zingers (one reindeer calls Rudolph an urban legend), it's a fine holiday time for ages 5 and older. --Doug Thomas

You won't understand the premise of this book if you've never sung "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," so let's start there. The carol begins, "Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer / had a very shiny nose / and if you ever saw it, / You would even say it glows / All of the other reindeer / used to laugh and call him names / They never let poor Rudolph / join in any reindeer games." If you notice that "all of the other reindeer" sounds suspiciously like "Olive, the other reindeer," you've discovered the source of Olive's adventures! Olive is a dog. But when she hears this holiday tune, a bit of an identity crisis sets in. She decides she must be a reindeer and heads to the North Pole to see if she can join Santa's reindeer team.
Olive gets to the North Pole just in time. Comet (the biggest reindeer) uses a piece of extra ribbon to tie Olive to the reindeers' elaborate harness system. As the sleigh rose high in the sky, "Olive was surprised it was so easy to fly." (The sight of a dog dangling beneath Santa's sleigh will reduce readers to charmed giggles.) Despite Olive's lack of flying ability and the unfortunate mishap caused by the reindeers' distraction, she, in her inherent dogginess, proves to be useful as both a flute retriever and a cookie smeller.
J. otto Seibold and Vivian Walsh have written and illustrated four splendid books for children: Mr. Lunch Takes a Plane Ride, Mr. Lunch Borrows a Canoe, Monkey Business, and Free Lunch. Publisher's Weekly's assessment of the creators' work in Free Lunch also rings true for Olive, the Other Reindeer: "Seibold and Walsh specialize in street-smart art and convoluted story-lines ... Seibold's illustration style [is] a sort of cubism for the '90s. His computer-generated, airbrush-smooth characters resemble digital icons, but their asymmetrical quality lends them a hand-drawn warmth. The spreads are abuzz with comical details." This very silly, endearing book is sure to delight your favorite kids--and adults, too. (All ages)
