Colored Snowballs
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened (NO substitutions)
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
2 teaspoons almond extract
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)
Colored sugar (red, green, blue, yellow, pink, etc.)
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Mix butter, confectioners' sugar and almond extract in bowl. Mix until light. Add flour and salt. Mix well. Chill the dough until you are ready to bake or bake immediately.
When ready to bake, roll dough into small balls, then roll in colored sugar. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake for about 10 to 12 minutes.
Yields about 4 dozen.

The third in the Notes Alive series with the Minnesota Orchestra is another fine introduction for kids to the arts. This computer-animated version of the Dr. Seuss story about the mood of colors (narrated by Holly Hunter) is combined with footage of a concert symphony. We follow a boy and his dog juggling his various moods, something soaring like a bird ("a blue day") or moping around the house ("a gray day"). The music is outstanding; Richard Einhorn created a new composition, which focuses on the individuality of instruments in the 30-minute piece. A percussive, hand-clapping sequence is quite fun. The animation doesn't seem as fresh in this day and age of A Bug's Life--it's quite bulky. Yet the film is brisk enough to entertain the youngsters and they will undoubtedly ask questions about the various instruments shown.
There's also a 15-minute short on the making of the film. It includes interviews with the animators, the composer, and, most notably, with Theodore Geisel's (Dr. Seuss) wife, who talks about her husband's influences and gives a tour of their house. Two years into the Civil War, free men of color were still denied the right to fight for the end of slavery. Weeks after Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, the governor of Massachusetts was authorized to raise the first northern black regiment, referred to at the time as "the Massachusetts 54th colored infantry."
Almost 100 men from Massachusetts' small black population joined the regiment while the rest of the 1,000 men were recruited from nearby states. They came from all walks of life—they were shopkeepers, farmers, musicians, blacksmiths, doctors, and lawyers. Intelligent and educated, they left their lives behind to join the battle against slavery.
The Regiment fought bravely for nearly two years before the company marched to take Charleston. In the fall of 1865, a victorious 54th Infantry returned to Boston, one portion of the 178,975 black men who fought in the war.
American Experience follows the adventures of the 54th as well as those of individual members, including Lewis and Charles Douglass, sons of abolitionist Frederick Douglass; Luis Emilio, who chronicled the regiment's movements; and James Gooding, whose letters were published as a column in his hometown newspaper.
