Speakeasy Chili
5 pounds ground round
Salt and pepper
1 tablespoon chili powder (more if desired)
1 (16 ounce) can dark red kidney beans
1 (16 ounce) can light red kidney beans
2 (16 ounce) cans small red beans
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3 large green bell peppers, cored and chopped
3 jalapeno peppers, cored and chopped
1 large red onion, chopped
1 large Spanish onion, chopped
1 large white or yellow onion, chopped
8 to 10 cloves garlic, finely chopped
4 (28 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
3 (64 ounce) cans tomato juice
Chili powder to taste
Salt and pepper
Break up and cook meat in large frying pan until browned and crumbly. Drain thoroughly. Season with salt, pepper, and at least 1 tablespoon of chili powder. Set aside.
Sauté green peppers, jalapenos, onions and garlic in oil until limp. Add tomatoes and juice from pan into a large pot. Add hamburger, sautéed vegetables, and beans to pot. Add tomato juice until chili is soupy, not too thick. Season with chili powder to taste. Simmer for 90 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent scorching.
Leftover chili can be frozen.

Young bootlegger Rooster (Patton) and undertaker's son Percival (Benjamin) are best friends from childhood, but adult life has become woefully complex: Rooster's wife despises his life at the nightclub Church, Percival is stuck taking care of his depressed father, and an ambitious gangster (Terrence Howard, Hustle & Flow, Crash) kills Rooster's mentor (Ving Rhames, Rosewood) to take over the gangster's bootlegging operation. The arrival of a high-handed cabaret singer (Paula Patton, Hitch) may help Rooster save Church, but when she and Percival fall in love, troubles multiply. Idlewild's musical numbers are packed with dynamic spectacle--not surprising, given that director Bryan Barber previously directed music videos for Outkast. Unfortunately, Barber's script is lackluster, taking some particularly cliche turns toward the end. Still, there are plenty of pop-out performances--singer Macy Gray turns up the heat in the opening number--that put Idlewild a step above such pop-star-driven flicks as Under the Cherry Moon and Glitter. --Bret Fetzer

Writer-director Alan Parker's feature debut Bugsy Malone is a pastiche of American movies, a musical gangster comedy set in 1929, featuring prohibition, showgirls, and gang warfare, with references to everything from Some Like It Hot to The Godfather. Uniquely, though, all the parts are played by children, including an excellent if underused Jodie Foster as platinum-blonde singer Tallulah, Scott Baio in the title role and a nine-year-old Dexter Fletcher wielding a baseball bat. Cream-firing "spluge guns" sidestep any real violence and the movie climaxes cheerfully with the biggest custard pie fight this side of Casino Royale (1967).
Unfortunately for a musical, Paul Williams's score--part honky-tonk jazz homage, part 1970s Elton John-style pop--lets the side down with a lack of memorable tunes. Nevertheless, Parker's direction is spot on and the look of the film is superb, a fantasy movie-movie existing in the same parallel reality as The Cotton Club and Chicago. A rare British love letter to classic American cinema, Bugsy Malone remains a true original; in Parker's words "the work of a madman" and one of the strangest yet most stylish children's films ever made. --Gary S.
