Pita Pocket Breakfast
1 pound sausage (pork, turkey or ground beef)
1 medium onion, minced
2 tablespoons olive oil (optional)
1 clove garlic, minced
1 green bell pepper, diced
12 eggs, beaten
1 jar salsa
6 medium pita breads
Preheat Dutch oven with 12 coals on the bottom.
Brown sausage, then drain fat, saving 2 tablespoons. Stir in onion, garlic and bell pepper; saute with sausage. Add eggs and sausage fat and cook together until eggs are scrambled. Spoon into pita pockets, and top with salsa to taste.
Make-ahead Tip: Brown sausage and saute garlic onions and peppers in advance, refrigerate or freeze in zip-type bags. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil when cooking in camp instead of sausage fat.

The Vienna State Opera's 1986 production of La Gioconda, Amilcare Ponchielli's only lasting success, was an increasingly rare event. The story--based on a long forgotten Victor Hugo drama--is an emotional roller coaster of high passion and self-sacrifice, but has fallen out of favor with the major international opera companies; instead, Ponchielli's contemporary Verdi and one-time pupil Puccini are today's guaranteed crowd-pullers. This is a shame. Ponchielli's score might be sumptuous to the point of occasional over-ripeness but it contains some marvelous arias, not least Enzo's "Cielo e mar." And whenever La Gioconda herself is on stage, it's hard not become enthralled by the richness of her suffering as painted by Ponchielli's lush, explosive music. Here is a woman who is given every opportunity to ensure the removal of her rival (Laura) for Enzo's affections, but who always does the decent thing, ultimately leaving herself with a stark choice between suicide and the repulsive paws of the evil Barnaba who has pursued her since Act I.
As La Gioconda, Hungarian soprano Eva Marton is utterly compelling. It's a role that places extraordinary emotional demands on the singer (Callas, not surprisingly, had a field day with it). Marton maintains total credibility. In voice, she is well matched by Placido Domingo's Enzo, who is at the virile peak of his vocal powers, rather suggesting a strength that the suggestible Enzo doesn't really possess. But perhaps the strongest aspect of Ponchielli's opera is the way in which the vocal jewels are distributed throughout the cast. Ludmilla Schemtschuk is an elegant Laura and Margarita Lilowa as La Gioconda's blind mother, La Cieca, sings an unforgettable "Voce di donna o d'angelo." And the ballet within the opera, the "Dance of the Hours," assumes its rightful place as a gleaming component of the whole work. --Piers Ford

The Car Man, the latest dance version of Carmen, comes courtesy of choreographer Matthew Bourne, who has devised his own scenario of Bizet's opera set in a garage-diner in the American midwest, circa 1960. This film treatment details all the excitement of the live performance at London's Old Vic, which capped a 2000 U.K. tour. The cinematography assists in capturing the atmosphere of Bourne's treatment--film noir with allusions to Hitchcock--through employment of chiaroscuro. The use of the split-screen technique also enhances the cinematic feel. The music sounds seductive and full-bodied, befitting the new story line (Bourne calls it an "auto-erotic thriller") in which an enigmatic stranger, Luca, walks into town seducing both Lana (Carmen) and Angelo (Don Jose). A swarthy individual, Luca looks an unlikely dancer until his first solo galvanizes the company.
The single stage set adapts into eight different permutations, taking us from diner through nightclub and prison and then out on the road in a cinematic finale where the Chevrolet cars of the period are destroyed in a pile-up. The period look is further enhanced with the girls in tight-waisted frocks and the men in Brando-esque T-shirts and jeans. The dance ensembles are an extraordinarily versatile group: classical, jazz, modern, and flamenco seem natural expressions of their body movements. Will Kemp deserves a special mention for his sensitive portrayal of Angelo. --Adrian Edwards
