Orange Soaked Bundt Cake

This simple cake packs a ton of orange flavor!!!
Cake
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour; more for the pan
2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
12 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened; more for the pan
3/4 cup canola or other mild flavored oil
(check for freshness before using)
1 1/2 tablespoons finely minced lemon zest (from about 2 lemons)
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup strained fresh orange juice
5 large eggs
Syrup and Glaze
1/2 cup frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
2 tablespoons dark rum
1 cup confectioners' sugar, divided
Heat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Butter and flour a 10-inch tube pan or 12-cup Bundt pan.
Cake: Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda into the large bowl of a mixer and blend. Add the butter and mix on low speed until fine crumbs form. Then mix in the oil, lemon zest, vanilla extract, and orange juice. Add the eggs one at a time and then increase the speed to high and whisk the batter until light, about 3 minutes, scraping the sides of the bowl if necessary.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake until a wooden pick inserted in the cake comes out clean, 45 to 50 minutes.
Syrup and glaze: While the cake bakes, whisk together in a small bowl the orange juice concentrate, butter, rum, and 1/2 cup of the confectioners' sugar.
When the cake is done, set the pan on a rack to cool for 5 minutes. With a thin skewer, poke the cake all the way through to the bottom of the pan in about 100 places. Pour 1/3 cup of the syrup over the cake and let stand for 1 hour before removing the cake from the pan. (At this point you can wrap the cake in plastic and hold for up to 3 days at room temperature; in fact, the flavor only improves.)
Cover the remaining syrup with plastic and store at room temperature.
When ready to serve, whisk the remaining 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar into the remaining syrup. Set the cake on a rack over a baking sheet and pour the glaze over the cake.
Let stand for at least 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Some have complained that the now-primitive electronics involved give it a dated feel. Disturbingly--and effectively--other-worldly is more like it. Kubrick also imbues repertory standards by Rossini and Elgar with dark, frequently hilarious irony, and makes Gene Kelly's sunny reading of "Singin' In The Rain" the underscore to an all-too-accurate prediction of societal nightmares to come. --Jerry McCulley

Stanley Kubrick's striking visual interpretation of Anthony Burgess's famous novel is a masterpiece. Malcolm McDowell delivers a clever, tongue-in-cheek performance as Alex, the leader of a quartet of droogs, a vicious group of young hoodlums who spend their nights stealing cars, fighting rival gangs, breaking into people's homes, and raping women. While other directors would simply exploit the violent elements of such a film without subtext, Kubrick maintains Burgess's dark, satirical social commentary. We watch Alex transform from a free-roaming miscreant into a convict used in a government experiment that attempts to reform criminals through an unorthodox new medical treatment. The catch, of course, is that this therapy may be nothing better than a quick cure-all for a society plagued by rampant crime. A Clockwork Orange works on many levels--visual, social, political, and sexual--and is one of the few films that hold up under repeated viewings. Kubrick not only presents colorfully arresting images, he also stylizes the film by utilizing classical music (and Wendy Carlos's electronic classical work) to underscore the violent scenes, which even today are disturbing in their display of sheer nihilism. Ironically, many fans of the film have missed that point, sadly being entertained by its brutality rather than being repulsed by it. --Bryan Reesman
