Chocolate French Toast

This is a recipe which I received in my e-mail and can't remember who I received it from. I copied it so fast that I forgot to copy the name. This is one recipe which I will definitely try, as I love anything that has chocolate.
1 loaf day old French bread
1 cup milk chocolate chips
5 beaten eggs
1 1/4 cups milk
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Your favorite syrup
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with vegetable shortening.
Cut French bread into 6 slices, 1 1/2 inches thick. Using a small sharp knife, cut 2-inch long slits in one side of each slice, cutting 3/4 of the way through the bread to create a pocket.
Spoon 2 to 3 good size tablespoons of chips into each pocket and press to close.
Place the filled slices into the prepared baking pan.
In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla extract, mixing well. Pour over the bread slices and cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate several hours or overnight.
Bake uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve the French toast slices with your favorite syrup.
This would taste great with strawberry or raspberry syrup along with some fresh strawberries or raspberries and some whipped cream. Yummy! I have to make this one just for myself.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and its sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, along with Roald Dahl's other tales for younger readers, make him a true star of children's literature. Dahl seems to know just how far to go with his oddball fantasies; in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, for example, nasty Violet Beauregarde blows up into a blueberry from sneaking forbidden chewing gum, and bratty Augustus Gloop is carried away on the river of chocolate he wouldn't resist. In fact, all manner of disasters can happen to the most obnoxiously deserving of children because Dahl portrays each incident with such resourcefulness and humor.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a singular delight, crammed with mad fantasy, childhood justice and revenge, and as much candy as you can eat. The book is also available in Spanish (Charlie y la Fabrica de Chocolate). (The suggested age range for this book is 9-12, but nobody this reviewer has met can resist it, including New York City bellhops, flight attendants, and grumpy teenagers.)

Back in 1991, when the first edition of Sauces was published, it's as though James Peterson said, "Okay, this is what we know so far. Where do you want to go from here?" The "what we know so far" part started with the Greeks and Romans, moved through the Middle Ages, into the Renaissance, through the 17th and 18th centuries, and right on into time as we know it, time that can be tasted in the sauce.

It is James Peterson's great talent that he can draw the home cook and professional cook into his dialogue on sauces, and teach them both how to stay afloat in such shallow waters.
Peterson gives the reader--in close to 600 pages, mind you--the continuum on which sauces have been based in culinary history. He gives the reader the kitchen science that allows sauces to work. He gives the reader the techniques necessary to follow along where many a cook has already whisked up a splendid creation. But most of all, he gives the reader permission to go ahead and be creative, to cut loose with knowledge and technique in hand and discover for oneself the way an inkling of a flavor idea can find its way to a dish and make the combined ingredients lift off the plate. Or not. Finding out what doesn't work can be just as important.
This is a book that can be taken to bed and savored, page by page, sauce by sauce. It is a book that should be on the shelf in any kitchen, professional or homebody alike. It is not a book to ever gather dust and need dusting. --Schuyler Ingle
