Kidsongs - A Day at Old MacDonald's Farm

View This Product at Amazon

From the first cock-a-doodle-doo to the last twinkling little star, A Day at Old MacDonald's Farm pulses joyfully with song, dance, and a barnyard full of activity. A passel of city kids arrives for a taste of sunny country life. Before night falls, they make a scrumptious breakfast, do chores around the mulberry bush, attend school with Mary's little lamb, and whoop it up at the old ball game. Their field-trip hosts include a high-stepping scarecrow, Gran and Gramps McDonald, and the usual four-legged farmy suspects. Together, this energetic cast belts out 10 perennial favorites, including "Skip to My Lou," "This Old Man," and, of course, the title song. A funky rock & roll score keeps the excitement building as one song piggybacks on the next. This delightful 30-minute show, produced in 1985, easily should appeal to little music lovers ages 7 and under. --Liane Thomas

Kidsongs - Very Silly Songs

View This Product at Amazon

Silly Willy and Silly Jilly dressed in Mary Poppins-meets-the Music Man regalia lead the singing kids through Silly Dillyville in this Kidsongs outing. The 11 tunes include standards like "The Name Game" (the song that rhymes every name with "bo-banna, fe-fi-fo-fanna..."), "Down by the Bay," "Michael Finnegan" and "Purple People Eater." Each song features characters that introduce the songs. So Billy Daffidilly sings about his eccentric mother, Professor Quackenbush describes the one-eyed violet beast (who also makes an appearance), and Farmer Phil shows off his straw-hatted iguana, a hen pulling a cart, and an owl that performs no discernable tricks in "Fiddle-I-Fee." The whole "town" joins in for the "Do the Silly Willy" finale, featuring Willy rapping in his candy-striped jacket. This 27-minute program was shot at Universal Studios in North Hollywood, California, and a tour of its attractions rolls under the credits. Aimed at ages 1 to 8. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Fried Green Tomatoes

Kathy Bates stars as an unhappy wife trying to get her husband's attention in this amusing and moving 1991 screen adaptation of Fannie Flagg's novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. After befriending a lonely old woman (Jessica Tandy), Bates hears the story of a lifelong friendship between two other women (Mary Stuary Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker, seen in flashback) who once ran a cafe in town against many personal odds. The tale inspires Bates to take further command over her life, and there director Jon Avnet (Up Close and Personal), in his first feature, has fun with the film. Bates develops a real attitude toward her thickheaded spouse at home and some uppity girls in a parking lot, but dignity is generally the key to Avnet's approach with the story's crucial relationships. Tandy is a joy and clearly loves the element of mystery attached to her character, and Masterson and Parker are excellent in the historical sequences. --Tom Keogh

The Secret of NIMH

View This Product at Amazon

In his book, Robert C. O'Brien called his brave widow mouse "Mrs. Frisby," but Disney escapee animator Don Bluth must have thought kids would laugh the wrong way at that. They renamed her "Mrs. Brisby" for NIMH. That acronym stands for the National Institute of Mental Health, and the rats that live near Mrs. Brisby came from NIMH--they have strange ways. But they're the only ones who can save her house and her children, so Brisby seeks them out with the help of a humorous crow (Dom DeLuise). The magic gets laid on a little thick but this is Don Bluth's most successful attempt to achieve a complete, sincere, animated film. It's often forgotten, but it's a true surprise and a rare treat in the vast wasteland of insubstantial children's fare. --Keith Simanton

The Fried Liver and Lolli Attack

View This Product at Amazon

Computer guru Dan Heisman returns, and this time he's cooked up a treat in the legendary Fried Liver Attack! This volume continues NM Heisman's examination of the Two Knights Defense (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6) with White responding 4.Ng5 - a "duffer's move" if you believe Tarrasch. After the classical 4...d5 5.exd5 many players of Black will make the obvious 5...Nxd5 recapture, but here's where the fun really starts! White now launches either the infamous Fried Liver Attack (6.Nxf7), or the labyrinthine Lolli Attack (6.d4), with spectacular play in both cases. Pity the poor player who wanders into these byways unprepared! And now we can add that anyone who hasn't read this book is most certainly, and completely, unprepared! This ancient variation has now been re-shaped by 21st century computing power, and the primitive attacks seen in former days no longer apply. If you're ready to shock your opponent, if you enjoy watching him crumble in the complications, then you'll love this ChessCentral CD-Rom! Here's what you get with The Computer Analyzes the Fried Liver and Lolli: * 10 in-depth Surveys of the opening, plus 2 extensive ChessBase Reports. * Over 500 games [but see below for 2005 update!], more than double the number found anywhere else. * Detailed opening keys, so you can find the games you want instantly. * 6 text documents to guide you through the book, explaining the important ideas! * Annotations, commentary, analysis, medals...and many extras! * New database of 353 games, from 2001-2004. * Tree database of all 875 games, which may be used as a Fritz family openings book. * An HTML folder of the complete "FriedLolli" database. * A .pgn file of the main database, plus a separate file for the newer games. * The ChessBase Reader is included by kind permission, so no other software needed! In other words, here is the most complete and comprehensive treatment of the Fried Liver and Lolli ever seen

American Farmer: The Heart of Our Country

View This Product at Amazon

When photographer Paul Mobley set out to capture the soul of America's farming communities, he discovered a culture defined by tradition, integrity, and hard work, and comprised of the most authentic and generous individuals he's ever encountered. Traveling across the country from Tennessee to Montana, Mobley and his camera were welcomed into the homes of over one hundred farming families, who graciously shared their personal histories along with the fruits of their labor. To spend time with them was to turn back the clock--to an era when there were no locks on doors, no urban sprawl, and no virtue more prized than common decency. Children still move across the street and not across the state when they grow up, and parents move back in with their children whern they grow old. Story after story, visit after visit, Mobley slowly came to know the independent farmer's spirit both from behind the lens and over the dinner table.

The result is a stunning series of portraits and direct quotes that collectively chronicle the life of the American farmer. Each image offers an unvarnished and intimate look inside the hardships and joys of a quickly disappearing lifestyle--one that once defined our national identity and now struggles just to keep a foothold. And even as encroaching cities threaten their livelihoods, these men and women continue to find sustenance in the same basic human values they were raised with. American Farmer is an inspirational reminder of what it means to live with simplicity and contentment, in a world that is driven by excess. This vivid portfolio is accompanied by anecdotes and memories in the farmer's own words that are both a testament to their enduring hospitatlity and a moving glimpse into their daily routines and family histories. But what you will read first, and foremost, are their faces. From Bruce Crump, a citrus farmer in Florida; to Patsy Fribley, a stockyard dealer from Montana; to Thurston Wilber, a Maine lobsterman, Mobley's intense and beautiful portraits capture the furrows of fields lining their brows, the crevices of drought creasing the corners of their mouths, and the grains of truth in their squinted eyes.

35 states included: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming

How to Eat Fried Worms

View This Product at Amazon

How to Eat Fried Worms has happily repulsed children since its original publication in 1973. Now youngsters can experience this classic story in a whole new yucky way, by listening to it on audiocassette. Narrator Jay O. Sanders gives extra kick and vitality to this already lively yarn. He throws himself into the role of a 10-year-old boy, facing the most revolting bet of his life. Billy must eat 15 worms in 15 days--but the reward will be worth it: $50 for a shiny new minibike. Luckily, Billy's friends cook up these fat juicy grubs in a variety of appetizing ways--drenched in ketchup and mustard, fried in butter and cornmeal, and the pièce de résistance, a Whizband Worm Delight (an ice-cream worm cake). Sanders derives obvious pleasure from reading (and singing) out loud the hilarious rhymes and childish chants concocted from the mind of the book's author, Thomas Rockwell.

"Trout, Salmon, flounder, perch,
I'll ride my minibike into church.
Dace, tuna, haddock, trout,
Wait'll you hear the minister shout."

How to Eat Fried Worms is a ghastly gastronomical treat that will dazzle young listeners. (Running time: two hours, two cassettes) --Naomi Gesinger
