He commands the title role with equal parts madness, mayhem, pathos, and improvisational genius, channeling Grinchness through his own screen persona so smoothly that fans of both Carrey and Dr. Seuss will be thoroughly satisfied. Adding to the fun is a perfectly pitched back-story sequence (accompanied by Anthony Hopkins's narration) that explains how the Grinch came to hate Christmas, with a heart "two sizes too small." Ron Howard proves a fine choice for the director's chair with a keen balance of comedy, sentiment, and light-hearted Seussian whimsy. Production designer Michael Corenblith gloriously realizes the wackiness of Whoville architecture, and his rendition of the Grinch's Mt. Crumpit lair is a marvel of cartoonish, subterranean grime. Then there's Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen), the thoughtful imp who rallies her village to recapture the pure spirit of Christmas and melts the gift-stealing Grinch's cold, cold heart. You've even got a dog (the Grinch's good-natured mongrel, Max) who's been perfectly cast, so what's not to like about this dazzling yuletide movie? The production gets a bit overwhelmed by its own ambition, and the citizens of Whoville (including Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Molly Shannon, and Bill Irwin) pale in comparison to Carrey's inspired lunacy, but who cares? If a movie can unleash Jim Carrey at his finest, revamp the Grinch story, and still pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. Seuss, you can bet it qualifies as rousing entertainment. The story of a friendly elephant named Horton who discovers--deep inside a daisy--a tiny city called Whoville with tiny, intelligent residents--this film (fleshed out a bit from the source) is strong on character and has striking, appealing visuals. The little folks of Whoville, with their natural air of aristocracy, are a kick, and when they come to see Horton as a hero for his democratic view of all life big and small, the effect is quite touching. More self-consciously suave and formal than predecessor Sean Connery, he immediately reestablished Bond as an uncomplicated and wooden fellow for the feel-good '70s. This film also marks a deviation from the more character-driven stories of the Connery years, a deliberate shift to plastic action (multiple chases, bravura stunts) that made the franchise more of a comic book or machine. If that's not depressing enough, there's even a good British director on board, Guy Hamilton (Force 10 from Navarone). Inside the center, a tool shop, loading crane, and hidden weapons bay packed with missiles and blasters are in place to keep them busy.
Crafting the Command Center
With 20 bags containing 1,154 pieces and four books of instructions, the Mission 6: Mobile Command Center was the biggest construction project that our Lego tester had ever undertaken. In about eight hours he completed the assembly, took it for a test drive, and secured Dr. Inferno in the high-tech jail cell. Like with all Lego sets, the instructions include here provide colorful step-by-step images that make it easy for any diligent builder to create the detailed Command Center and it's accessory vehicles. Although, when our Command Center was finished, we did discover that one sticker was missing.
This set gets great fun-factor ratings, due in large part to the opening doors that hide all the spy technology, and the fact that this mobile base is on wheels and can go anywhere. Our tester also appreciated the way most of the smaller vehicles fit neatly inside the Command Center's compartments, the super-cool mission brief projector, and the moving crane. The detailed mini figures and the missiles hidden in the grill of the truck got the thumbs up, too. Overall, we found only one minor design flaw. When the Command Center is assembled and is pulled around by the truck cab, some of the hinges that hold the compartment doors in place come apart easily, causing play to pause while they are reattached.
Whether your child uses the Command Center by itself or as part of an existing Lego collection, it's sure to inspire hours of fun. We also appreciate the way that Lego systems never limit imaginative play. All the cool hardware that makes up the Mobile Command Center can be used to build any structure or vehicle your child can dream up. And time has shown that building projects are a great way to inspire cooperative play between friends and siblings, too.

Innovative Game Gets Kids Moving
This is not your traditional board game. I Can Do That! comes with imaginative props inspired by the classic children's book The Cat In the Hat by Dr. Seuss, as well as a deck of color-coded cards that provide funny, challenging activities.
To start, a player picks one of each of the three color cards. Taken together, the cards create a fun and funny activity the player is challenged to do. For example, Card 1 could read "Take Four Giant Steps," Card 2 "With the Cake," and Card 3 "On your head!" Each card also has one, two, or three stars on it for score keeping purposes. If the player wants to take the challenge, he says "I can do that!" and proceeds. If he succeeds, he keeps the cards in his own scoring pile. If he doesn't think he can do the activity, he can re-draw until he gets an activity that he can do. But watch out: if he draws a "Stop!" card, he must give up his cards and end his turn. The player with the most stars in the scoring pile wins the game.

We also love that this game goes beyond traditional board games to get kids up and moving. We also love that the game's structure encourages kids to challenge themselves, while the option of drawing and re-drawing cards still gives them the choice to play at their comfort levels. The simple, generalized game instructions are open it to many variations, and the instructions actually encourage families to customize the rules to their children's abilities and desires.
The only concern we had was with the game's durability. The foam pieces definitely won't last as long as your vintage Monopoly set. But on the plus side, the flexible, soft props guard well against injuries or mishaps.

Quick, Consistent Sharpening
Precision tools like small chisels are extra tricky to sharpen freehand on large, rough wheels. That's why the sharpening port on the WS3000 is so innovative. This port, which handles blades from 1/8 inch to 2 inches, makes it incredibly easy to sharpen the bevel on small tools from underneath the wheel.
Angles of 20, 25, 30, and 35 degrees are set in the machine, so you don't need an extra jig or a special tool to ensure that you are creating a bevel edge with a consistent, effective angle. You can also achieve a perfect five-degree micro-bevel for fast re-honing.
An adjustable fence in the port keeps the tool square during sharpening, and when you pull the tool back out of the port, a ceramic oxide lapping abrasive automatically removes the burr on the back of the tool for a clean finish and a sharp cutting edge.
Convenient Sharpening Options
When you are working with bigger tools, a conveniently placed tool rest makes it easy to hold larger blades in place as you sharpen them freehand on the top of the wheel. Also available is a wide blade attachment that enables you to sharpen and hone blades up to three inches wide with the Work Sharp 3000 (not included).
And when it comes time to sharpen contoured tools, you can slip an innovative slotted Edge-Vision wheel onto the WS3000. This lets you look through the wheel to see the edge of the tool you are sharpening from below, taking the guesswork out of maintaining lathe tools and other curved or v-shaped blades.
Durable Glass Wheels Provide Consistency
In addition to the Edge-Vision wheel, this sharpener comes with two tempered glass wheels. The big advantage of tempered glass is that it maintains its flatness and won't wear down like a traditional grinding wheel.
You can attach a wide variety of standard six-inch, adhesive-backed abrasive disks to these wheels, making it easy to select the grit you need for rough grinding or fine honing. And with two disks, you can always have four different grits ready to go (one on each wheel surface), making it easy to move from task to task.
